Welcome to Serbia By SPEAK UP

Welcome to the school Just to feel some atmosphere from our classes.

Nice to meet you We live in a town called Kragujevac, the centre of a region called Shumadia. We like roller blades, cycling, swimming, playing computer games. We love pizza and ice-creams. We all enjoy meeting new people and making new friendships. We’ve been in this group for quite a long, some of us (the younger Ana and Luka) have known each other from the kindergarten. The older Ana and Stefan are twins. In our country boys tease girls as well so we keep together. Anyway, we are glad to meet you.

A teenage greeting card Hi! We’re the merriest, teenage, group. We enjoy helping the young ones, but we LOVE chatting, for most of us are girls (chatter-boxes?). We are all very good friends. You will also see a younger group chatting. Interestingly, they’re more serious than us.

Taking Cambridge ESOL exams Here you can hear what some of our students said after taking Cambridge ESOL exams. The young ones took YLE (7-12 years) and the older ones took KET and PET. Click the video you want to see.

Folk dance from Serbia Here you can see some folk dance from our country, and from our region. What we have on, is our national costume.

The mountain of Goc and other beauties of Serbia Serbia is a beautiful country. The mountain of Goc is one of the most beautiful mountains in Serbia. It’s called Children’s mountain. You can see here The Tree of Love. There’s a belief that, when you cut somebody’s name in the tree, he/she will fall in love with you.The beautiful monastery is on the top of beautiful mountain of Ovcar. There are over 100 monasteries on the way to the top. Then you can see the 21 st meridian passing through the mountain of Samar. Then, you can see two waterfalls. The first one is on the mountain of Beljanica and the other one is on the mountain of Rajac. The cave is one of the oldest in Europe. There you can see some pre- hestoric animals as well as meet a group of pre- hestoric people. The white church is near our town. It’s the home of our royal dynasty Karadjordjevic. Their ancestor, Karadjordje, built the church. He was the one who led the Serbs agianst the Turks in 1804. It’s really a very big complex with the residence and a big swimming pool and a park. The Karadjordjevic family (the royal one) ruled in Serbia until the beginning of the World War two. Then they were in the exile in London, and now they came back to Serbia again. The big tree is the tree where Milos Obrenovic, the duke of Serbia, stood in 1815 and told the people: ”Here I am, here’s another war against Turks. “ That was the beginning of the Second Serbian Uprising. In the time of Milosh, Kragujevac, our town, was the capital of Serbia. Milos is on the next slide, with a priest. Then you can see a church on the Savinac River, where Mina Karadzic, a daughter of our language reformer, Vuk Karadzic, was buried. Vuk created our Serbian Cyrillic alphabet (completely different from the other ones) and made everything easier for us by the rule: “Write as you speak, read as it’s written.” His daughter was a big love of one of our most famous romantic writers of that time and his most beautiful poems were dedicated to her.CLICK THE VIDEO TO SEE IT.

Our town There are two slides. The left one shows the life in our town. The right one are the most important places in Kragujevac. Click the one you want to see. You will see a beautiful lake called Bubanj as well as the Lepenica river. You will also see the square called AT the Cross and the beautiful Big Park. On the right slide, the First Grammar School, The “Joakim Vujic “ Theatre and The Court, the first three slides, were founded in the 19 th century (during the rule of Milos Obrenovic, at the time when Kragujevac was the capital) and are the oldest in Serbia. Then you can see the Old Assembly where the first Constitution was declared. It’s in the yard of the Old (orthodox)Church (the last two slides).
