Mechanical Engineering Department Preventive Maintenance Dr. Talal Mandourah Part I: Safety 1.Introduction to Safety 1.Types of Danger: A.Natural dangers: -Earth Quakes -Volcanoes -Hurricanes & Tornadoes -Floods and rain currents -Dryness -Earth and rocks falls 4

Mechanical Engineering Department Preventive Maintenance Dr. Talal Mandourah Part I: Safety B- Non-Natural Dangers -Wars -Fires -Building Falls -Bombs -Diseases 5

Mechanical Engineering Department Preventive Maintenance Dr. Talal Mandourah Part I: Safety C- Industrial Dangers: -Noise pollution -Poisonous Gas -Magnetic Fields -Nuclear Explosions -Chemical Explosions -Falls -Cut, broken bones and back bone injuries 6

Mechanical Engineering Department Preventive Maintenance Dr. Talal Mandourah Safety Policy Every Project and construction must have Safety Policy and Emergency Evacuation Plan reviewed and tested every while. Evacuation Procedure must by tried and tested twice a year at least. Safety instructions in all facilities must be posted clearly and monitored to be followed. 7

Mechanical Engineering Department Preventive Maintenance Dr. Talal Mandourah Safety Policy 2- Personal Protection Equipment- PPE: -All workers who occupies in laboratories, workshops, plants, construction areas and others must take care of the personal Protection equipments as follows: -Overall or pant with long sleeve shirt without ties. -Gloves against cuts, burns, and welding gloves. -Body protections gown and suitable goggles when welding. - 8

Mechanical Engineering Department Preventive Maintenance Dr. Talal Mandourah Safety Policy -Wearing Safety Shoes protected from top and bottoms. -Wearing body protection cover for grinding or welding -Wearing eye protector when working or dark goggle for welding or so. -Wearing ear plugs when high noise. -Wearing suitable masks when poisonous gases or flying particles. -Wearing body bands and assuring safety ladders when working at high elevations. -Avoiding working while tired or sleepy and focusing while working. 9

Mechanical Engineering Department Preventive Maintenance Dr. Talal Mandourah Safety Policy -Avoiding electrical overloading and taking care of electrical short circuits. -Not smoking near dangerous materials or when sleepy or tired. -Taking precautions when dealing with fireplaces and heating objects. -Drinking milk daily and following a special nutrition system to avoid poisonous gases. -Not smoking in closed areas and not in front of children. -Turn off all electrical equipment before leaving the place. 10

Mechanical Engineering Department Preventive Maintenance Dr. Talal Mandourah Safety Policy When fire: –Know emergency exits, fire extinguishers and how to find then when dark. –Call fire department, ring the bell, take emergency exits, go to gathering points. –Decide if fire can be killed (if reaching 3 m ceiling) –If can’t be leave the place while closing all doors and windows to kill the fire. –Do not collect belongings, you may loose them and your life too. –When trapped, close all openings with wet cloths and cover your nose with wet cloths too. 11

Mechanical Engineering Department Preventive Maintenance Dr. Talal Mandourah Safety Policy -When escape, walk BELOW smoke and cover your body with a wet blanket and mouth with wet cloths. -When fire on your cloths, roll down on the floor DO NOT RUN. -Practice good workplace housekeeping. -Place oily rags in a covered metal container. -Maintain machinery to prevent overheating and friction sparks. -Report electrical hazards. Many fires start in faulty wiring and malfunctioning electrical equipment 12

Mechanical Engineering Department Preventive Maintenance Dr. Talal Mandourah Safety Policy -Never attempt electrical repairs unless you are qualified and authorized. -Maintain free access to all electrical control panels. -Use and store chemicals safely. -Use all precautions to prevent ignition in potentially explosive atmosphere. -Smoke only in designated areas, and extinguish smoking materials safely. -Never block sprinklers, firefighting equipment or emergency exits. 13

Mechanical Engineering Department Preventive Maintenance Dr. Talal Mandourah Safety Policy -Post emergency telephone numbers as well as the company address by the telephone in your station for quick access if a fire were to start in your work area. -Learn how to properly use a fire extinguisher. -Work safely to prevent fires, and know what to do if one occurs. 14
