2: Fill The Silence
For Native English speakers a long silence or pause; is bad news. Any silences of longer than five seconds will be misinterpreted as rude or not being understood. You need to learn some fillers. These are expressions such as: That’s a good question, hmmm let me see, ahh I’m glad you asked me that. This tells the native speaker you understand and you are thinking about your response.

Practice learning the answers to common questions off by heart like: Where are you from? Is there much to do in your city? What are the people like ? You want to sound natural, not like a robot, this should be your main goal in English conversation. Use expressions such as In my opinion, I would say that, As far as I am concerned.

4: Repeating Robot
When asked a question in an English conversation, don’t repeat the question back in statement form: Q: What’s your favourite program to watch on TV? A: My favourite program to watch on TV is Dexter. Try paraphrasing the structure of the question. This is a great trick to sounding natural: I’m always watching Dexter on TV. I usually watch this show every Sunday night on HBO. I try not to miss a single episode. I just started season 5 and I am completely.

Ask yourself before you begin speaking if you are sure you have understood what was asked, and do not be afraid to ask the person to repeat the conversation question. But try not to say ‘I don’t understand’ or “what? what ?” Instead try to say I didn’t quite catch that, could you repeat that again, please? or ask a checking question such as Do you mean…? that shows you have understood the conversation question.

Remember we are not at the cinema. You dont have to stay quiet or give the minimum in your answers. I like to call this my 5 sentence rule. The main problem is if you say too little in a conversation, you miss the opportunity to show off your English ability. It could also be interpreted as rude. As a general guide, you should aim to give five or six sentences for each question asked in the English conversation. Forget about making mistakes, native speakers won’t care.

Try to give more detail in your answers. Try giving FULL AND COMPLETE answers. Offer information more and not only when requested. This is something to work on. Look at online articles and interviews and looks specifically at the journalist’s question and then the length of the answers given. This is a good way to improve your answers.

The listener needs to understand your words. There’s a good reason pronunciation is fundamental to spoken communication. Even when you pronounce words clearly, intonation can make it difficult to follow what you say, sounding like a robot again. Try to change your intonation, volume and speaking speed in order to keep the listener interested in your story.

We need to improve some of your vowel sounds. The best way to do this is: Listen to English Music. An example is listen to Frank Sinatra (slow & clear lyrics), listen to how he pronounces his vowel sounds and the use of descriptive words. Find FREE the lyrics (the words) to the song. Read and listen as you are a singer trying to learn the song. This is a great way to improve as they are repeated over and over. It will also allow you to learn your favorite English songs. This will help with any pronunciation or intonation problems you have.

If you really don’t have any idea about the topic in the conversation, just say I’m afraid I know nothing about this topic and then you ask the listener a question on a topic you do know about. Simply change the topic and keep going.

Try to find 3 new words a day and learn them. To be honest, I recommend 10 new words in 10 minutes. It’s easy to be done. Even better, try to open up BBC NEWS IN PICTURES or and look at the news pictures with key vocabulary for that day. Read the sentence under each picture and look up the words in the Cambridge online dictionary for free. This will really build your vocabulary fast. If you did this 10 minutes every morning when you get to the office while having coffee. That’s 50 new words a week, 200 new key words every month!

14: FORGET YOUR ACCENT
I am deadly serious! remember this for the rest of your life: your accent is what makes you well you. It shows where you are from so be proud of that and learn to love it. All native English speakers have accents. It makes no difference if you are from the streets of New York or downtown Las Vegas, Leicester Square in London or Liverpool’s inner-city. All native English speakers have very different and strange accents. They are proud of their accents. Speak slowly clearly and confidently, that's all you have to do.

15: FORGET ABOUT GRAMMAR
Sometimes students get all freaked out (worried) about grammar. This is especially true for students who grew up attending language classes with very strict teachers. The teachers would drill the grammar in class like in the army. Most of us had classes like this sometime and recall (remember) clearly struggling in class and forgetting most of the lesson. Remember that you only study grammar in order to communicate. Practice with a few exercises, for example write a story about your life in the past tense or present tense and then try to work your new story into a conversation.
