3 What is the Great Barrier Reef? The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest living organism. It is made up of 900 islands stretching over 2,600 kilometers, and can be SEEN FROM SPACE!

4 What Lives in the Great Barrier Reef? The types of animals found and discovered so far is about this: About 30 species of whales and dolphins About 23 species of reptiles About 600 species of echinoderms More than 1,500 species of sponges About 17 species of sea snake s

5 The Great Barrier Reef Coral Explained More than 100 types of coral can occupy just one acre of the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef is about 500,000 years old. And that’s pretty young!

6 GBR History About 1.6 million people visit this World Heritage site each year.

7 The Great Barrier Reef: IN DANGER! 67% of The Great Barrier Reef is subject to over fishing. Also, all 100% is subject to a thing called “Coral Bleaching “. Due to one or a couple assorted reasons, the coral loses nutrients and starts to turn white. If nothing changes for a while, it will die. WE MUST SAVE THE CORAL!

8 Here are some creatures that live in the Great Barrier Reef.

10 Coral Precautions If you ever go scuba diving in a live coral reef, you will need to be careful. ONLY TOUCH white pieces laying on the ocean floor, and NEVER EVER touch red or orange coral, because it might be poisonous and make you very sick. Never touch the fish. Or the sea snakes. I know that’s a little paranoid, but seriously, no one wants to get bit, stung, or cut by coral reefs and it’s little inhabitants.
