3 HISTORY OF MSMC o Private, Catholic, primarily women’s college o Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1925 o The first baccalaureate of science in nursing program in California was established at Mount St. Mary’s College, graduating its first class in 1952 o Since its inception, Mount St. Mary’s College has granted more than 17,000 degrees

6 Nursing Programs at the Mount FOUR NURSING PROGRAMS DOHENY  Associate Degree in Nursing – 2 to 3 years  Classes in evening or afternoons  clinical on weekends, 12-hr days  Overall GPA of 2.75 or greater  Science GPA of 2.5 or greater Starts in Fall and Spring of each year

12 Evening and Weekend Program Adults who want to pursue a career in nursing Classes - Monday to Thursdays evenings Hospital experiences are on weekends, usually Sat/Sun, but may include Fridays

13 Two options available Pre- Nursing Option (2.5 - 3 years)  Take GE courses in first semester(s)  Start nursing courses after completing GE courses Direct-to-Nursing Option (2-2 1/2 years)  Transfer all GE courses, start nursing program

14 Evening/Weekend Program: FULL-TIME:  Rigorous  Intense Prior to admission must plan for  Time management  Consistent support system Course load: 6 to 13 units/semester; A minimum of 6 units to qualify for financial aid.

15 ADN Curriculum Plan Total program: ten, 8-week sessions A total of 83 units required (includes 40 units of required pre-requisites) As outlined in the college catalog

16 What is the schedule like? Two 8-week sessions/semester 8-week summer session  Fall semester -late August to December  Spring semester -January to May  Summer session- mid-May to mid-July.

17 Class Schedule of Hours Classes:  Evenings -> Mon – Thurs, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.  Afternoon -> Mon – Thurs, 12:30-4:30p.m.  You will be on campus 1-2 times per week. Clinical experiences:  Saturdays/Sundays, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Occasionally on Fridays, depending on course.

18 Medication Math Calculation Exam 100% required EVERY nursing course with a clinical  2 chances allowed  If failed, the course must be dropped.  This will delay the completion date of the program.

19 LVN Mobility Option Degree Option: Must complete ALL GE requirements Must possess an active LVN license. Must meet all other AD.N. requirements to receive 10 units of nursing credits for Med.- Surg Nursing PRIOR to starting the program.

20 30 Unit Option - LVNs Non-Degree Option: Allows NCLEX-RN exam after completing 26 units of required courses. NOTE:  May not be endorsed by other states  May limit opportunities for career advancement  Does not receive a degree from MSMC

21 Clinical Requirements Nursing = an educational program Which includes a clinical component, i.e., “hands on” requirement Cultural competence An appreciation for the common good

22 Clinical Site Assignment Carpooling is strongly encouraged A reliable car is a must to get to the hospital. Proximity from home to clinical site, although considered, is not a priority in assignments. The responsibilities simulate employment. No make-up for absenteeism, which may result in withdrawing from course and may alter graduation date.

24 RANDOM DRUG TESTING Clinical facilities may require random drug testing of students Failure to comply or a positive will result in exclusion from clinical Exclusion from clinical results in failure or withdrawal from the program

25 Health Clearance Students are responsible for insure that the their records are annually updated:  Physical exam, lab work (annually)  TB testing—2-step (annually)  Malpractice Insurance (annually) www.nso.com  Titers & immunizations: Hepatitis B, Varicella & MMR  CPR (American Heart Association)  Fire Card (First month of the program)

26 BACKGROUND CHECK Mandatory prior to clinical placement 1 st semester: process will be coordinated by the program Any concerns  must be addressed BEFORE beginning the program.

27 Denial Of Licensure per BRN Policy For crimes/acts which are related nursing qualifications, functions, or duties:  sex crimes  drug crimes  crimes of violence Examples: child abuse, sex offender, assault/battery, dangerous drugs or devices

28 Program Success Will require:  no employment or minimal hours <20/week  Structural time management  Personal competence  Proficient study skills

29 Successful Completion Earns: A.A. Degree in Nursing Eligible to take the NCLEX-RN EXAM A stepping stone to other Nursing opportunities such as Bachelors of Science in Nursing, MSN, DNP, PhD

32 Facts Regarding Admission The Office of Admission receives over 300 applications for the Associate Degree in Nursing program; therefore your applications and all supporting documents must be complete and submitted on or before the deadline. No exceptions will be made. Common issues that disqualify candidates: Missing or late transcripts Not submitting up-to-date transcripts Missing or late letters of reference Reactivation forms without Self Reporting Checklist and Updated Personal Statement

33 GE Requirements (as noted in the catalog) Chemistry w/lab * Human Anatomy w/lab * Human Physiology w/lab * Microbiology w/lab * Oral Communication (Public Speaking or Speech) Written Communication (2 semesters of Freshman Composition) General Psychology * 5 year recency requirement on courses, prior to entry of program.

34 GE Requirements (as noted in catalog) Lifespan Developmental Psychology Philosophy- Critical Thinking, Logic, or Critical Reasoning Introductory Sociology General Studies Elective (GSIII) (History or Art/Music Appreciation or Political Science or Literature) **Please note that all of the required GE requirements must be completed before being considered as a Direct-to-Nursing candidate. **

36 Religious Studies Requirement RST 41-Biomedical Issues & Christian Ethics Religion or ethics courses offered through  Philosophy  History or  Literature departments will not meet the requirement This is the only course that can be taken concurrently with the program and will happen no later than the first academic year in the nursing program.

We only accept online applications, however a PDF of the application is available. If you submit the application PDF, the application fee is $50.

39 Check your application status MSMC Web Portal  A few days after you submit your application, you will get an email MSMC Web Portal  The MSMC Web Portal will display announcements, documents status, application status, and required documents for the program if admitted. Please note: we receive a lot of documents 2 weeks before and after the deadline, so it takes longer during that time for items to be reflected in WebAdvisor.

51 Grant Information: Pell Grants  Based on “Federal Need” as determined by the Department of Education.  Amount received is based on enrollment status per semester.  Maximum amount is $5730, per academic year. Note: Student’s that have obtained an undergraduate degree are ineligible. California Grants  Based on “Federal Need” and GPA as determined by California Aid Commission.  GPA Verification Form is due March 2 nd of every academic year.  GPA Verification form can be downloaded at: http://www.csac.ca.gov  You may qualify for up to $8,056 per academic year. Amount is determined by enrollment status, per semester, and type of Cal- Grant received.

52 Direct Federal Stafford Loan Information: Guaranteed & Deferrable  Must meet Federal Requirements (Please visit www.fafsa.ed.gov for details).www.fafsa.ed.gov  Previous Stafford Loans, if applicable, must be in current status. The undergraduate aggregate limit is $57,500.  This loan is deferrable upon graduation, with a 6-month grace period.  3.86% interest rate.
