Changing Lives Changing the World Brown ● Columbia ● Cornell ● Dartmouth ● Harvard ● Penn ● Princeton ● Yale Advancing the Kingdom of Jesus Christ in the Ivy League

2 Ivy League Christian Foundations The eight Ivy League Universities were established with strong Christian roots. Original mottos included: –Brown: “In God We Hope” –Columbia: “In Thy light shall we see the light” –Dartmouth: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness” –Harvard: “Truth for Christ and Church” –Princeton: “Under the Protection of God She Flourishes” –Yale: “Light and Truth”

3 Ivy League Adrift Although these universities were largely established to bring glory to Christ, they have drifted far from their moorings: –Harvard attempted to de-recognize a Christian ministry because it required its leaders to be Christian. –Dartmouth boarded up the chapel’s stained glass windows because of their explicitly Christian nature. –Princeton’s Chair of the Ethics Department, Peter Singer, advocates infanticide, euthanasia, bestiality and necrophilia. –Many other examples can be cited.

4 The Good News: 5,600 students are involved in Christian ministry The Bad News: 106,400 students (95%+) either do not know Christ or are not involved in Christian ministry. The situation is worse among the faculty and staff. Ivy League Christianity is barely afloat

5 As the Ivy League goes, so goes the world There is a concentration of many of society’s future leaders at a relatively small number of universities: –The Ivy League Universities are arguably among the most culturally influential institutions in America, if not the world. –Their graduates are extraordinarily influential in all areas of society.

6 8 of the 9 U. S. Supreme Court justices 4 of the 7 Massachusetts Supreme Court justices who recently legalized same-sex marriage Alumni include legal leaders

7 Alumni include political leaders

8 Alumni include business leaders

9 And leaders from every other sector of society! Alumni include arts and media leaders

10 If we are going to reach the world for the Gospel and change our secular culture, we must see the Ivy League transformed for Jesus Christ.

11 Our Founding Date: January 2002 Founder: –Matt Bennett (Cornell ’88, ’89) Why: –The success God brought about through Matt Bennett at Princeton can be multiplied and spread throughout the Ivy League. –We have the potential to change the world for good by developing thousands of godly Christian leaders.

12 Our Mission To change the world by bringing sweeping spiritual transformation to the Ivy League Universities, thereby developing and mobilizing godly leadership to transform all sectors of society.

13 Our Goals By the year 2020 we are trusting God for –100% of students, faculty and staff: Knowing a true follower of Jesus Christ on campus Receiving 3-5 opportunities to hear the gospel every year Having the opportunity to grow in devotion to God and in character development –20% of students, faculty and staff involved in Christian ministry

14 Imagine 20% Involvement That is: 46,000 Ivy Leaguers (11,400 undergrads + 11,100 grad students + 6,200 faculty + 17,100 staff)

15 Why Christian Union? “In their mission to the Ivy League campuses, Christian Union has emerged as a powerful influence in building tomorrow’s leaders.” - Steve Douglass (Harvard ’69), President, Campus Crusade for Christ Christian Union uniquely has the FOCUS and RESOLVE to see the Ivy League radically transformed for Jesus Christ. This ministry is intentionally positioning itself with the adequate resources and comprehensive strategies to reach the eight schools.
