Father, Son, & Holy Spirit’s Work in Blessing Verse 4 describes the goal of the blessings; the Bride for marriage. Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. …that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and blameless. Ephesians 5.27 same word as “holy ones” in v. 1

Work of the Father Verse 5 begins specifics of God’s eternal plan of the Church. He determined beforehand that we (those in Christ) would be adopted as His sons by means of Jesus (His person and work). This was according to the kind intention of His will. benevolence delight pleasure To the praise of the excellencies of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us (of the Church) in the beloved Jesus.

The Person & Work of Jesus Verse 7: By means of His blood we (being in Christ) have redemption. Redemption from Webster’s 1828: Repurchase of captured goods or prisoners; the act of procuring the deliverance of persons or things from the possession and power of captors In theology, the purchase of God's favor by the death and sufferings of Christ; the ransom or deliverance of sinners from the bondage of sin and the penalties of God's violated law by the atonement of Christ.

The Person & Work of Jesus (cont.) By means of His blood we (those in Christ) have forgiveness of our sins. These two, redemption and forgiveness, are according to the abundance of His grace. He also lavished His grace upon us. abounding overflowing

More on the Father’s Work Verse 9: He made known to the Church (and through the Church) the mystery of His will. Not mysterious, but not previously revealed. This is according to His benevolent will purposed in Christ. That purpose being the summing up of all things (earthly realm & heavenly realm) in Christ.

More on the Father’s Work (cont.) Verse 11: Those in Him, being adopted sons, have obtained an inheritance. [The Father] seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fulness of Him who fills all in all. Ephesians 1.20-23

More on the Father’s Work (cont.) [The Father] made us alive together with Christ… and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus, in order that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2.4-7 that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise [with Israelites] in Christ Jesus through the gospel… Ephesians 3.6

The Holy Spirit’s Work Verse 13-14: After listening (hearing with understanding) to the message of truth the good news of your salvation, And, after believing that gospel, you were sealed in Christ with the Holy Spirit of promise. Sealed: identified/baptized as belonging to God’s own possession. Being sealed in Christ, one becomes a partaker of the afore-stated blessings. The Spirit Himself is the earnest deposit of our inheritance to come.

To the Praise of His Glory On the basis of His love for the Son and grace toward those who love His Son, the Father determined to call them out as a bride for His Son. Though this plan, position, and purpose for the Church may be a long time coming to completion, the person of the Holy Spirit is Himself God’s promise to us of our coming redemption as God’s own possession. All of this is so the Church may praise God forever.
