1 Making Our Roads Safer Blackburn with Darwen Good Health Fund 2014-15

2 Why is this a priority for Blackburn with Darwen? Many positive steps have been made through previous and ongoing local casualty reduction initiatives Real challenges for Blackburn with Darwen: Children living in the 10% most deprived wards are 5 times more likely to be involved in a road traffic collision than those living in the 10% most affluent wards 46 th highest rate out of 160 Local Authorities for people killed or seriously injured on the roads of all ages 2 nd highest rate of children killed or seriously injured on the roads out of 160 local authorities in England Children in the 0-5 years age group are most likely to be injured as a pedestrian or car occupant The risk of being injured in a road traffic incident greatly increases in the 16-20 age group and remains high until 45 years of age The risk of being injured as a pedal cyclist is highest in the 6-10, 11-15, 26-35 and 36-45 years age groups For people aged 56+, the risk of being injured on the road is greatest as a car occupant (driver or passenger), closely followed by pedestrians

3 What are we looking for? Projects that support, enable and involve local people and communities to implement their own solutions to their own road traffic concerns A number of projects across the whole of Blackburn with Darwen, delivered at a local level Proposals could address any locally identified road safety need, examples include: –Speed of cars and other traffic –Volume of cars and other traffic –Safety of pedestrian movement, road crossing, pedestrian safety awareness, equipment or schemes to improve pedestrian safety –Safety for cyclists, equipment or schemes to improve cycling safety, schemes to increase driver awareness of cyclists –Responsible parking –Improved safety for children in outdoor play –Local awareness raising of an issue of concern through innovative means

4 Examples and ideas of projects Novice driver scheme for drivers aged 17-25 who obtained their driving licence in the last 12 months Brake Road Safety Week Campaign Development of a walking bus to school or another community group, supported by hi-visibility jackets Purchase and provision of safety reins for parents of young children alongside parental education Purchase and provision of helmets for young cyclists supported by safe cycling education A cycling proficiency course or development of a safe cycling area/track A community targeted campaign devised and delivered with local people to educate around the risks on the roads Set up a local Roadwatch Scheme Creation and installation of innovative signage to drivers in a residential areas or near a school Develop a network of ‘safe streets’ adopted and enforced by local residents where children can play in safety Purchase of equipment to set up a community crossing patrol in a busy/dangerous area A programme to increase seatbelt wearing/use of child car seats A programme targeted at motoring offenders to reduce re-offending
