U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Background and Process: SOM Activities under USUHS Instruction 1100 1100 is the “Bible”… Requirements (CV, letters, etc.,) are clearly indicated All appointments > Assistant Professor route through the CAPT –CAPT is PRO-FACULTY!!  They are NOT the enemy….  BUT – they are responsible to adhere to the 1100 Importance of the 1100: “value” of the appointment –Military accomplishments ≠ academic promotion –Academic rank needs to stand on its own merit  Equivalence in other institutions  Not a “cheap” or “easy” process…

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Qualifications Scholarship of Discovery “Pursuit of phenomena and observations” “Original, disciplined research” “Assimilated and interpreted through scholarship of integration” What does it mean? RESEARCH!! –Pubs, presentations, protocols –Investigation –Adding to body of knowledge –Funding

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Qualifications Scholarship of Integration “Combines and connects disciplines” “Interpret… bring new insight to original research” “Integrates knowledge from various fields” What does it mean??????? –Ties in with research, funding –Recognition of expertise, “tying ideas together” –More than just producing research, but how to utilize it

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Qualifications Scholarship of Teaching “Communicates understanding” “Development of innovative practices and course materials” 3 levels: –Level I: classroom, departmental –Level II: institutional level, educational expertise recognized  Course director, development of materials as opposed to delivery only, Program Director –Level III: disseminated and recognized contributions  research

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Qualifications Scholarship of Application “Responsible implementation of knowledge gained from other three scholarships” “Bridges between theory and practice” “Includes clinical activities” What does it mean???? –Applying knowledge to practice –Often includes peer-recognition of efforts

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Peer Recognition of Scholarly Activities Related to multiple scholarships –Not just one… Original research, presentations, invited manuscripts, societal educational materials… Funding Study sections, review boards, advisory groups, editorial boards or reviewer… Awards Leadership positions in societies, educational institutions… “Minimum” number listed for SOME ranks… –Not just a number….

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Professional Service Also related to multiple scholarships DENOTES PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE AND PEER-RECOGNITION!!!!!!!!!! –Cannot over-emphasize the peer-recognition… –Institutional, educational societies, scientific societies –Local, regional, national, international Includes clinical activities Includes institutional citizenship –“what do you do for me???” (i.e., USU)

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology “Problem” Areas Package: help the Chair out!!! –Pay attention to details, timelines CV: –Make sure it’s complete, up-to-date –It’s your professional “life”, and often the “first impression…”  Put your best foot forward  Include all activities, even if they seem minor… Abbreviated CV: a requirement

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Problem Areas Personal Statement: it is actually read… –Emphasize your accomplishments, especially relative to scholarships –Tell the CAPT why they should promote/appoint you Letters: important issue!! –Letter-writers: > rank to which you’re applying –make sure writer documents THEIR rank… –Recognition of your contributions!  Not that they drank beer with you after work…  Even if they supervised you, they should recognize you for what you’ve done, not just that you were a good person to have work for them….

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Problem Areas Research: not difficult –CV, bibliography  Ensure productivity parallels current promotion consideration  100 pubs but last one being 10 years ago does NOT go over well for current promotion consideration UNLESS explained –Funding: protocols, grants, etc Teaching: not difficult –As long as documented…. –Level requirements vary according to rank, pathway  Clinician-Educator Professor: at least Level II –Appendices can help with documentation of criteria

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Problem Areas Institutional citizenship: not difficult –Document USU service (teaching, committees, indirect involvement [DoD committees, etc]) Clinical activities: not difficult –Staff physician, Division Head, etc, etc Time in rank: –Sometimes problematic, but not an absolute –Accomplishments outweigh time… So, any other issues???? –Sound easy???

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Problem Areas: Professional Recognition Often the “rate-limiting step” Recognition “outside the box”… –Beyond the parent institution Often the service/accomplishment is there –Just not well-documented Requires CV to be comprehensive –Chair letter helps –Letters can be VERY helpful  Attest to recognition  “Would be promoted here…”

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Problem Areas: Professional Recognition CAPT Summary for Faculty Senate AY 2008- 2009: –Reasons for deferral: “lack of documentation to support reputation beyond parent institution” Considerations: –Activities in societies (not just membership)  Abstract reviewer, moderator, subcommittees, etc, etc –Editorial boards, reviewer (?) –Awards –Invited lectures (demonstrates peer-recognition) –Board examiner

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Problem Areas: Professional Recognition Military Service: sometimes problematic The “box” is still the “box” Recognition outside of your Service –Within the Service may still not demonstrate reputation outside the “institution” –Example: Consultant/Specialty Advisor  Reflects recognition within the Service, but…  Does it reflect academic recognition outside the Service?? –Although important, may not meet academic criteria

U NIFORMED S ERVICES U NIVERSITY of the Health Sciences Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Summary Refer to 1100 –Particularly Appendix 1 and Appendix 2 –Specifies (as much as possible) what will be checked for CAPT wants to appoint/promote –USU is not “served well” by not promoting its faculty….. Pay attention to details, timeliness No one will do it for you better than you can do it yourself… –Look out for your own careers!!
