1 Cardboard Boat Regatta Design (Part2): Full Scale Race Design Mr. Yersak Livingston High School Technology & Design 1

2 The Problem: Design and build a floating structure to be tested by carrying two members of your team across the pool and back in the shortest amount of time.

3  Structure may only consist of cardboard and glue & duct tape provided in lab.  Duct tape may only consist of less than 25% of entire boat.  Material may not exceed 2 pcs. of 32” x 115” cardboard.  Structure may be waterproofed with latex paint or by covering it in plastic.  Structure must float  Structure may not rest on the bottom of the pool when tested. Specifications:

4  Only two of the three or four team members will be required to be in the vessel. – (So don’t panic)  Life Vests are MANDATORY  Life Guards will be on duty  No Swimming or people other than the teams in the pool at any time Others odds and ends:

6 PLANNING & THE DESIGN PROCESS.

7  What problems did we have?  What were the construction techniques?  How did we calculate total penny load? Remember the penny barge?

8  Weight your Team Members  Calculate to Team Weight: 640 lbs. – With 80 lbs. for boat added in Boat Calculation Example

9 Water Weight ±64 lbs. 1 ft. H20

10  560 lbs. team weight + 80 lbs. boat weight  640 lbs. / 64 lbs. per CF = 10 CF of H2O displacement – (This is the amount of water the team and boat will push out of the way to stay buoyant in the water.) STEP 1: Calculate Water Displacement:

11 STEP 2: Calculating Water Line L X W = Area of Rectangle Base x Height /2 = Area of Triangle 8 Feet 5 Feet 2 Feet * Find the surface area of the bottom of your vessel *

12  Calculations: – (LxW) + (B x H/2) = SF – (5x8) + (5 x 2 / 2) = 45 SF  Volume of team displacement / floor area  10 CF / 45 SF =.22’ x 12” = 2.67 in – Water line will be 2.67 Inches up the side of the vessel. L X W = Area of Rectangle Base x Height /2 = Area of Triangle 8 Feet 5 Feet 2 Feet STEP 2: Calculating Water Line
