Parent Meeting February 2013

STAAR State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness Emphasis on college and career readiness standards Began 2011-12 school year All tests closely aligned with grade level TEKS 3 performance cut points Unsatisfactory Satisfactory Advanced Academic Performance

The tests….. Grades 3-8 Reading – Gr. 3-8 Math – Gr. 3-8 Writing – Gr. 4 & 7 Science – Gr. 5 & 8 Soc. Studies – Gr. 8 3 High School MathEnglishScienceSocial Studies Algebra I Geometry Algebra II English I English II English III Biology Chemistry Physics World Geo. World Hist. U.S. History The high school level STAAR tests are COURSE tests, NOT grade level tests

Three Performance Cut Points Level III: Advanced Academic Performance Performance in this category indicates that students are well prepared for the next grade or course. They demonstrate the ability to think critically and apply the assessed knowledge and skills in varied contexts, both familiar and unfamiliar. Students in this category have a high likelihood of success in the next grade or course with little or no academic intervention. Level II: Satisfactory Academic Performance Performance in this category indicates that students are sufficiently prepared for the next grade or course. They generally demonstrate the ability to think critically and apply the assessed knowledge and skills in familiar contexts. Students in this category have a reasonable likelihood of success in the next grade or course but may need short-term, targeted academic intervention. Level I: Unsatisfactory Academic Performance Performance in this category indicates that students are inadequately prepared for the next grade or course. They do not demonstrate a sufficient understanding of the assessed knowledge and skills. Students in this category are unlikely to succeed in the next grade or course without significant, ongoing academic intervention.

STAAR End of Course Applies to students first enrolled in grade 9 in 2011- 2012 or below 12 tests (3 in each core subject area) A student must earn at least the “minimum” score on all End-of-Course STAAR assessments taken Students must meet a cumulative passing score in each subject area in order to meet recommended or distinguished graduation requirements Students may take a re-test on any EOC test upon request

STAAR End of Course Three testing opportunities – fall, spring, summer Linguistically accommodated version available Modified and Alternate versions available for all except Algebra II, Chemistry, and Physics

Cumulative Score The End-of-Course STAAR Assessments will have a range of performance. Unsatisfactory Minimum Satisfactory Advanced Does not meet standard, must re-test, can not count score towards graduation 1 SEM below Satisfactory, can count score towards graduation Met Standard College Ready

What are the graduation requirements? To graduate a student must earn at least the minimum standard on all EOC assessments taken Achieve a cumulative score that is greater than or equal to the number of EOC assessments taken multiplied by the satisfactory standard HB 3 mandates that a student’s score on the EOC must count as 15% of the FINAL grade in the course

End of Course STAAR Examples Science Minimum = Biology 3367, Chemistry 3348, Physics 3346 Satisfactory = 3500 Advanced = 4576 To graduate, a student must Score at least the minimum on all science EOCs taken Achieve a cumulative equal to 3500 times the number of EOCs taken For most students this would be 3500 x 3 = 10,500

Diploma Requirements RHSP and DAP require higher than minimum on Algebra II and English III Unsatisfactory Minimum Satisfactory Advanced Minimum High School Program Algebra II and English III for Recommended High School Program Algebra II and English III for Distinguished Achievement Program
