1 STAAR 3D Data We just got a bunch of data What do we do with it STAAR data is not the same as TAKS data Whole new set of tools and ways of thinking Decision-making Turn to person next to you: Can we improve the quality of learning without improving the quality of teaching? Can we improve quality of teaching without improving quality of our leadership? Development Which teachers need most support Which teachers can help out What do we do? Grounded in real kids! We want them to graduate from high school

2 The Big Picture Understanding the New System
Start with the Big Picture

3 STAAR Grades 3-8 End of Course Content Process STAAR has 2 parts
Grades 3-8 and EOC Make sure we understand – EOC is a part of STAAR Held together by a thread In Sci and SS – what ties Gr 3-8 and EOC is the process standards Biology anchors on Gr 6 biology So content connections are not what really connects the systems Mostly connected by process Process

4 Grades 3-8 Grades 3-8 Reading Gr. 3-8 Math Writing Gr. 4 & 7 Science
Social Studies Gr. 8

5 High School END OF COURSE Assessments
Math English Science Social Studies Algebra I English I Reading English I Writing Biology World Geography Geometry English II Reading English II Writing Chemistry World History Algebra II English III Reading English III Writing Physics U.S. History How many?

6 STAAR Performance Standards
2 Cut-Points / 3 Levels Satisfactory Advanced Level I Unsatisfactory Academic Performance Level II Satisfactory Academic Performance Level III Advanced Academic Performance What does it take to pass the test TEA is using the Level numbers instead of labels Confusing because we also are numbering the phases Level I has a dotted line – only applicable for EOC People are confusing Minimum. Kids who scored minimum still failed the test. Above Minimum For EOCs Only

7 Students who score Level I - Unsatisfactory on an EOC
Must be provided with accelerated instruction in the subject Minimum Score Below minimum: MUST retest At or above minimum: MAY retest

8 Performance Categories
Level II Satisfactory SUFFICIENTLY PREPARED for next grade or course Level III Advanced WELL PREPARED for next grade or course  Level I Unsatisfactory INADEQUATELY PREPARED for next grade or course Performance Categories

9 Sufficient?

10 Phase-in of STAAR Performance Standards
STAAR EOC Level II – 3 phases Set in each subject area based on when the student takes his/her first EOC in that subject area Final 1st EOC taken in Phase 2 1st EOC taken in or Phase 1 1st EOC taken in or STAAR 3-8 – phases to be determined Fall 2012

11 STAAR EOC Performance Standards

12 STAAR EOC Performance Standards
Look at raw score %age in each content area for Level II – Phase 1 Level II – Final

13 The 3-step phase-in . . . Math English Science Social Studies
ELA: huge first step Let’s think about it: As we phase in, the Pass Rate is likely to go down That will send message that our kids are doing worse Must prepare for this

14 So . .. what does this mean for us now?

15 Grounding the Phase-in Primary Cohorts – By Phase
Level II Phase Year of First EOC Primary Grade Level in 1 2 Final 10th 9th What grade levels are these kids in in ? 8th 7th 6th

16 Graduation - Cumulative Score
Student must meet Cumulative Score requirement in each content area Cumulative Score = A student must achieve at least the Minimum Score in order for the score to count toward Cumulative Score # EOCs taken in content area Level II - Satisfactory Academic Performance in the content area X Separate sheet: one page

17 To Graduate on the RECOMMENDED High School Program (RHSP)
A student must: Meet 4 x 4 curriculum requirements AND Meet the EOC Cumulative Score requirement in each content area Pass each EOC in the content area OR Meet the minimum score on each EOC and achieve the cumulative score Meet Level II - Satisfactory on Algebra II English III Reading English III Writing

18 STAAR EOC Performance Standards
Cumulative Score Requirements Level II: Final English 12,000 (6 x 2000) Math Science Social Studies (3 x 4000) Cumulative Score Requirements Level II: Phase 1 English 11,250 (6 x 1875) Math Science Social Studies 10,500 (3 x 3500)

19 Working with Cumulative Score – Phase I Math
Highlight or circle every Level II score or higher (3500) Maria – don’t even need to calculate cumulative score Now check each Minimum score Now determine cumulative score for each kid 10,938 7,452 10,540 10,170 10,639 Y Y Y N Y RHSP MHSP RHSP None MHSP
