1 District 2 Local Emergency Planning Committee COMMUNITY Shelter-In-Place Program

2 What is Sheltering-In-Place? Seeking Immediate Shelter –Building (home, church, office, mall, store) –Vehicle (Car, truck, bus, train) The most important thing is to follow the instructions of local authorities and know what to do if you are advised to shelter-in- place.

3 Shelter-In-Place What Could Happen? Shelter-In-Place What Could Happen? Interstate/Highway Accident Train Derailment Terrorist Attack Manufacturing or Facility Incident Agricultural Incident

4 Sheltering-In-Place How Will I Know ? The order to Shelter in place would likely come from any of the following: –Local Public Officials –County Emergency Management Officials –Law Enforcement –Fire Fighters An emergency alert notification would be made via any of the following: –Television/Radio –Telephone –Door-to-Door

5 What Will I Need ? “Be Prepared” Plastic Sheeting Bath Towels First Aid Kit Water Fresh Batteries Non-Perishable Food Flashlight Duct Tape Battery-powered radio

6 Shelter-In-Place 4 Steps to Remember 1. Move people and pets inside. 2. Close and lock all doors & windows. 3. Turn off ventilation systems. 4. Turn on a radio or TV for further information & instructions.

7 Shelter-In-Place Step 1: Move Inside Quickly move everyone indoors and do not use elevators. Pre-select an interior room with few windows. If possible, select a room that has access to water and restroom facilities.

8 Shelter-In-Place Step 2: Close and Lock All Doors and Windows Seal off all doors, windows, ceiling vents, and other sources of outside air. Place a wet towel at the base of the door to cover the openings. Secure them in place with tape. If dangerous fumes have entered your home, place a wet cloth over your nose and mouth.

9 Shelter-In-Place Step 3: Turn off Ventilation System Turn off all heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems; turn the inlets to the “closed” position. If caught at the scene of an accident: –Close all windows, vents, air conditioning, and ventilation systems. –Dial 9ll. –Move clear of the accident and try to stay upwind of the incident.

10 Shelter-In-Place Step 4: Turn on Radio or TV Shelter-In-Place Step 4: Turn on Radio or TV Stay Calm. Listen to the TV or radio for further information or instructions. Stay off the telephone unless there is an emergency.

11 Shelter-In-Place “Don’ts” Call the school or try to pick up your children. Leave your shelter until the “all clear” signal is sounded.
