 As a sport, cross-country skiing is one of the most difficult endurance sports, as its motions use every major muscle group and it (along with running, rowing and swimming) is one of the sports that burn the most calories per hour in execution.  One of the legends in cross-country skiing competitions is Bjorn Daehlie (Norway).

 Today more and more races are being held in audience-friendly formats, such as mass start, sprint, relay and pursuit.  The modern events in which athletes compete in at the World Cup and Olympics are (distances presented in Female/Male format): 1 km Sprint, 2X1 km Team Sprint, 10 km/15 km Individual Start, 15 km/30 km Pursuit, 30 km/50 km Mass Start, and 4x5 km/4x10 km Relay.

It consists of two stages: Jumps from jumping places (individual and team) and then sprint and ski relay. The competitions have been held since 1924, introduced at the first winter Olympics in Shamoni (France).

 Ski jumping has been included in the program of every Winter Olympic Games.  On April 6, 2011, the International Olympic Committee officially accepted women's ski jumping into the official Olympic program for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Mountain skiing was born in the ALPS.

 It is a separate kind of sport.  The sportsmen use a wide board to slide on the snow and compete in Half – pipe, Boarder – cross and parallel Slalom – Giant.  It has been in the Olympic Program since 1998 (XVIII Olympics in Nagano, Japan).

Free Style is often called Ski Acrobatics. It is a kind of mountain skiing. Free Style includes 3 events: ski ballet, mogul and acrobatic ski jumping. In ski ballet sportsmen descend a gentle slope to music and demonstrate sliding elements, turnings and jumps. Men and women take part in Free Style competitions. It has been in the Olympic Program since 1992 (XVI Olympics in Albervill, France).

 It is downhill racing on a sledge along a special route with artificial ice.  The position on the back makes the body gravity control one of the most difficult elements.  It appeared in 1928 at the 2 nd Olympics in Switzerland. The best track for it is in St. Moritz.

 Bobsleigh is downhill racing on a special sledge, a bob, along the artificial track.

Skeleton represents descending on a special route with artificial ice in a skeleton, a sledge with turbular runners on a hardened frame. Each athlete usually performs 2 attempts. Total time is summed up and the winner is a person who gets the best result. Men started to compete in Skeleton in 1928 and women - in 2002. Skeleton track is 1200-1500 m long. A skeleton speed is over 100 km|hour.

 It is one of the most popular winter games in Russia, Canada, USA, Sweden, Switzerland and many other countries.  The first Game was held in 1920 in Belgium at the VII Olympics.  Two teams play with wooden sticks and try to push a rubber puck into the opponent`s goal.

. In the program of the Olympic games figure skating is distinguished by pair figure skating and dances on ice. In total 4 sets of awards are played out. Figure skating competitions are held to splendid music. Russian sportsmen are usually among the winners. They dance on the ice arena and fulfill different elements and supports.

Individual competitions among men and women are also very interesting. Plushchenko is a real leader in a Russian team.

Two teams of 4 players each try to get a hard round stone into the opponent`s home place. Only women - athletes take part in it.

 Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors race each other in traveling a certain distance on skates.  In the Olympic Games, long-track speed skating is usually referred to as just "speed skating", while short-track speed skating is known as "short track".  The standard rink for long track is 400 meters long.  It is one of two Olympic forms of the sport and the one with the longer history.

 Racing can be done with individual start, or in time trial races of inline skating, where a maximum of eight skaters start at the same time.  Skaters are timed, and the times are compared at the end.  Races may also be held with a mass start. Team races are also held.

Sportsmen skate with a high speed at the distance of 500–1500 meters around an oval ice arena. It has been in the Olympic Program since 1992 (Iberville, France).
