2 WORD LIST 1 These words contain common roots, prefixes and suffixes. When you master the spelling patterns and meanings of these words, you can apply that knowledge to help spell and build meaning for other words. You are not born smart…you get smart!

3 composer The suffix -er means a person or thing that does something. When -er is added to a word that already has an “e”, the original “e” is dropped. You are not born smart…you get smart!

4 discovery The prefix dis- often changes a word to an opposite form. To cover something can mean to hide it. When you discover it, it is no longer hidden. Discovery is the root word cover with the added prefix dis- and the suffix -y. You are not born smart…you get smart!

5 encouragement The root word for encouragement is courage. The prefix en- and suffix -ment are added with no spelling changes. You are not born smart…you get smart!

6 hopeless The root word hope and the suffix -less make up this word that means without hope. You are not born smart…you get smart!

7 impossible Root word possible with the prefix im-. In many words the prefix im- changes the word to an opposite. You are not born smart…you get smart!

8 musician A magician makes magic, a beautician helps make you beautiful, and a musician makes music. The suffix -ian sometimes indicates a person who does something. There are no spelling changes, but the pronunciation changes. You are not born smart…you get smart!

9 The suffix -est means “the most”.
richest The suffix -est means “the most”. You are not born smart…you get smart!

10 unfriendly The prefix un- often changes a word to its opposite meaning as in unnecessary and unhappy. The suffix -ly changes friend to friendly. You are not born smart…you get smart!

11 EXTENDED WORDS EXTENDED WORDS are the 8 words already studied, combined with 12 words that are created by removing prefixes and/or suffixes. You are not born smart…you get smart!

12 Composer, but without the –er suffix.

13 Composer, but without the prefix com- or the suffix –er.

14 discover Discover is the root word cover with the added prefix dis-. It was studied last week as discovery. You are not born smart…you get smart! 14

Sometimes it’s hard to remember if you spell FRIEND with an “ie” or and “ei”. Just Remember the saying: “I” before “E”, except after “C”, or when sounded like “A” as in neighbor and weigh. You are not born smart…you get smart! 24

25 WORDS CREATED BY COMBINING PARTS
The following 8 words are created by mixing and matching the base words already learned, with suffixes and prefixes already learned. You are not born smart…you get smart!
