1 Room 22 Ecole Victoria- Albert “Play Ground Safety” Video Final Video Celebration Presentation by Armynn Galicia

2 Teacher Note Dear Keith, I’ve sprinkled/dusted the PoL in this power point. I hope it is clear when you are reading it through.

3 About the Video Back in November my grade 3 students were asked to create a video about playground safety in the school as a part of our Health Curriculum. This video would be presented in our school assembly. We used an inquiry based approach to take us on this journey. The students were very proactive in making the video from the start. They brainstormed the do’s and don’ts when playing in the playground and also asked an expert (our playground monitor) to check our list and to add more information.

4 Once we had our ideas, I divided the kids into groups that I knew could work well with each other. We watched a Dorritos commercial and discussed the different angles and how it highlighted the emotion of the video. Angeles of focus were: -Long shot-Wide shot-Up shot -Mid shot-Close up

5 Each group was given a camera to explore how it works and to try out the different angles. Then we discussed the jobs for video making (camera boy/girl, actors, director) and students organically chose their jobs.

6 Storyboarding Students were asked to rehearse their scenes then apply their scenes in a storyboard. In the storyboard students were asked to draw each scene depending on the angle and to describe the scene.

7 Rehearsal Time! Here are the groups practicing their scene.

8 Filming Time! Here are the students filming their scenes! A director hard at work yelling, “ACTION!” In her hand is the trusty script that she refers to after every shot. The actors are standing on their spots, the camera boy is ready to film.

10 Student Reflection “I liked that we worked with each other. No one fought or argued.” “I was proud of myself and my class, because the whole school got to watch what we did.” “It was fun! I never worked with a camera before, so I learned something new.” “I liked yelling ‘Action!’ or ‘Cut’ and everyone had to listen.”

11 Teacher Reflection StrengthsChallengesNext Steps -Students were able to work together in groups -Task was differentiated which made every student engaged -Students used a video topic that was familiar to them -Student voice was honoured -Lots of opportunities for reflection on the process (AFL) -Deciding on how much was needed to add on the storyboard. We struggled with writing too much about the scene or too little -Deciding whether the students were capable of editing their scenes. Although I know that with more time, the students would have been proficient with editing, I decided to show the students how the editing process worked while I edited their scenes. They did add their input while I edited a scene in front of the class -Next time I will give students time to edit their work on a smaller video, such as a “How to Video” -I would have the students create their own criteria for their scenes
