3 On Toad’s ( 蟾蜍 )birthday, Frog gives him a hat. Toad is happy. Toad puts on the hat. It falls down over his eyes. “I am sorry,” says Frog. “That hat is bigger than your head. I will give you something else.” “No,” says Toad. “This hat is your gift to me. I like it. ” But Toad can not see anything with the hat. Frog and Toad are sad for a while. Then Frog says, “Toad, tonight when you go to bed you must think some very big thoughts (想法). Those big thoughts will make (使) your head grow larger. In the morning your new hat may fit.” “What a good idea,”says Toad. That night when Toad goes to bed, he thinks the big thoughts. He thinks about big sunflowers. The sunflowers become bigger and bi g g e r. He thinks about tall trees. The trees become taller and tal l e r. He thinks about high mountains. The mountains become higher and hig h e r. Then Toad falls asleep. Frog comes into Toad’s house and takes the hat. Frog pours some water on the hat. He puts the hat in a warm place to dry (变 干). It begins to shrink. That hat grows smaller and smaller. Frog puts the hat back to Toad’s house. When Toad wakes up in the morning, he puts the hat on his head. It is just the right size. Toad runs to Frog’s house. “Frog, Frog!” he cries. “All those big thoughts have made my head much larger. Now I can wear your gift!”
