Extinct species

Pro-Text 1 We can bring back species that we killed We can bring back species that are culturally valued

Con-Text 1 We need to address the conditions that caused extinction Every species we bring back is competition for limited resources Ethically, how do we decide who/what to bring back?

Pro-Text 2 “most pharmaceutical drugs… are derived from natural compounds.” Plants should be brought back IF they can offer cures for diseases Animals like mammoths fertilized land that is now incapable of sustaining life. If we were to bring them back then mammoths might be able to fertilize land that no one can live on

Con-Text 2 NONE

Pro-Text 3 Who cares

Con-Text 3 De-exitinction is far fetched, financially problematic, and extremely unlikely to succeed

Pro-Text 4 Who cares

Con-Text 4 More effort should be allocated to preserving EXISTING life!

INTRO Start with the opposing claim (From Text 1) “While many believe it is the ethical responsibility to revive plants and animals that humans have driven extinct and which may have important cultural significance… End with your thesis “In fact, according to text 3, De-exitinction is far fetched, financially problematic, and extremely unlikely to succeed.” Indeed, the argument for bringing animals and plants back seem to be more emotional and involve little logic. These scientists and ethicists point out that insist that extinct plants MAY offer cures to diseases, yet until they provide evidence as th what plants cure what diseases, how can we know which plants to use our resources to bring back?

Body 1 The best and most logical arguments as to why de- extinction should not occur are: First, bringing back extinction is an extremely costly, time consuming idea that will only work on species that are only recently extinct. Second, bringing back species will only create more competition for limited resources which could have the consequence of driving other species extinct. Those who believe we should bring back extinct plants need to think rationally about the consequences of bringing back long dead life. What IS reasonable is that humans should instead dedicate time and effort to prevent the conditions that cause extinction.
