2 Respect for your health and your safety. Deputy Chief Fire Officer for the UK said:- "I hope that people will be extra vigilant after seeing and listening to these safety messages. A smouldering cigarette is the biggest cause of fatal fires, causing one-third of all deaths from fires….” Chief Medical Officer for the UK said:- “Smoking is the single most important preventable cause of death in the UK…110,000 people a year die from diseases caused by smoking.”

5 A vast majority of young people don’t smoke and want a smoke free life. Most young people in this School don’t smoke and want their right to working in a smoke free environment upheld. In July 2007 the law changed and all public buildings will be smoke free zones.

7 Legal age for buying tobacco was raised to 18 from October 1 2007 Someone who starts smoking young is three times more likely to die of cancer compared to non- smokers’

20 Some hard facts 90% of all lung cancers are caused by smoking. Over 30,000 people die of lung cancer in the UK each year. It is a grim way to die! Over 110,000 people in the UK from smoking related diseases every year.

29 QUITTING SMOKING FACTS When you quit smoking: After 20 minutes your blood pressure and pulse rate will stabilise After 8 hours the oxygen levels in your blood will return to normal After 24 hours the lungs will start to clear out the build up of tar After 48 hours your sense of taste and smell will be significantly stronger After 72 hours you will have more energy and be more alert After 3 months your lungs will be more efficient After 1 year your risk of having a heart attack is about half that of a smoker

32 No tolerance of smoking in or around the School’s site and roads nearby. We continue to offer support to help people to quit. We want to help people to break free of one of the greatest health and safety risks we know. BUT!!...... Exclusions will are the automatic consequence if students are caught smoking or in possession of smoking materials.
