4 The Retail Smoking Cessation Market The total sales for smoking cessation products in supermarkets and drug stores in 2004 was $478 million. That is more than soap, toothbrushes, razors, lipstick and shaving cream sales--with far less shelf space required. The smoking cessation products (tablets) segment had the biggest growth of any retail segment in 2004 with a 29.8% increase in dollar sales and a 34% increase in unit sales. Only 9 categories (8%) posted double digit increases in retail dollar sales out of 112 categories tracked in Health & Beauty. More and more smokers are seeking to quit as the public is educated on the devastating health risks of smoking. Sales Statistics from Mass Market Retailer 4/25/05.

6 Smoking By The Numbers 50 Million Smokers In the United States (25% Of the Adult Population). Statistically, 70% Of All Smokers Want To Quit. The Average Smoker Spends More Than $2,000 (and as high as $6,000) Annually On Cigarettes. Smoking is the primary cause of America’s top two killers, Cancer and Heart Disease. Smoking is the #1 preventable cause of sickness and premature death in the nation and is the USA’s #1 health problem. Smoking kills 440,000 Americans per year, and is directly responsible for 20% of the deaths in the U.S. annually.

7 Facts About the Smoking Crisis Background On the Problem Of Smoking Cigarette smoking has been identified as the most important source of preventable morbidity and premature mortality worldwide. Smoking is responsible for approximately one in five deaths in the United States. From 1995 to 1999, smoking killed over 440,000 people in the United States each year. 1 This includes an estimated 264,087 male and 178,311 female deaths annually. Among adults, most smoking attributable deaths were from lung cancer (124,813), coronary heart disease (81,976) and chronic airway obstruction (64,735).² Excluding adult deaths from exposure to secondhand smoke, adult males and females lost an average of 13.2 and 14.5 years of life respectively, due to smoking.² If current tobacco use patterns persist in the United States, an estimated 6.4 million children (8,830 per 100,000) will die prematurely from a smoking-related disease. ² Smoking costs the economy over $150 billion in annual health care costs and lost productivity, including $81.9 billion in mortality-related productivity losses and $75.5 billion in excess medical expenditures.² It is directly responsible for 87 percent of lung cancer cases and causes most cases of emphysema and chronic bronchitis.² Cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of death in the United States. 3 It is estimated that as many as 30% of deaths from cardiovascular disease are a result of tobacco use. 4 In 2001, approximately 65,000 women died of lung cancer. 5 85,000 men die each year from smoking related cancers of the trachea, lung and bronchus. 6 These statistics are not encouraging, and indicate that smoking has a far more negative impact on the health of Americans and the strength of our economy than most people are aware of. These statistics alone should make people quit, but unfortunately many people relapse back into the habit.

8 The Smoking Crisis (con’t) In 2000, more than 70% of smokers wanted to quit, and 41% tried for at least a day. 7 Many smokers report making 8-11 attempts before quitting for good.8 With a large majority of smokers desiring to quit, it is imperative that they are given the tools and support they need to increase their chances of being successful. The SmokeRx program is intended to increase their chances by focusing on some of the common challenges encountered in the process. The benefits of quitting smoking are enormous. The excess risk of developing heart disease as a result of smoking may be reduced by as much as half in the year or two after quitting. 9,10 After 15 years, the former smoker's risk of heart disease approaches that of a person who has never smoked. 10 Five to 15 years after quitting the risk of stroke returns to the level of those who have never smoked. 10,11 Quitting reduces the risk of lung cancer; 10 years after quitting the risk for lung cancer is 30% to 50% that of the risk of those who continue to smoke.10 Men who quit at age 35 increase their life expectancy by 7 to 9 years. Women who quit at age 35 increase their life expectancy by 6 to 8 years. 12 It is never too late to gain benefits from quitting. Quitting at age 45 increases life expectancy by 6 or 7 years. Quitting at age 55 increases life expectancy by 3 to 6 years. Quitting at age 65 increases life expectancy by 1.4 to 4 years. 12
