Pollution and Hazardousness: Poultry manure and litter are sources of pathogenic organisms and pollution, both are extremely hazardous for population and the environment (soil, groundwater, flora and fauna) Aggravation of the ecological environment: Cattle-breeding and poultry- farming products, as well as general consumption are growing worldwide Regulation: Strict requirements to reduce negative forces on the world and its inhabitants Treatment: Release, disposal and recycling of waste from livestock and poultry farms is impossible without treatment Valuable feedstock for fertilizer and feed additives: Poultry manure contains a large number of useful components: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and a significant amount of trace elements: magnesium, calcium, boron, sulfur and enzymes

9 9 Proposed Solution ● Ecologically safe method for cattle and poultry manure processing ● Recycling technology for non-disposal of organisms and plant nutrients is achieved by the following process: Pre-Treatment of source material by bringing the moisture of the source material to a certain low percentage Treatment of the ‘dried’ materials by Microwave Irradiation

10 10 Pre-Treatment of Source Material ● The use of microwave irradiation requires high consumption of energy derived from high humidity of the source material ● Microwave power of 1 KW; Frequency of 2.45 GHz; room temperature water: each gram of water requires ~80 Tues of absorbed power to evaporate ● In order to achieve low cost usage of microwave irradiation it is required to reduce the level of moisture in the source material ● After the process of ‘drying’ the moisture in the source material to a certain low percentage, the moisture remains mostly in the microorganisms (viruses and bacteria)

11 11 Microwave Radiation ● Water is efficient conductor and major component of every microorganism: ● Bacteria contain 70-80% of water ● Water content of bacterial spores or viruses is 5-15% ● The microwave irradiation in centimeter diapason is strongly absorbed by water ● Effect of microwave irradiation is concentrated in the required “Sensitive Points" ● Effects on the object is carried out not “from the outside”, as it used in the existing methods of sterilization, but “from the inside” - at the expense of thermal energy released in the body of the microorganism itself

14 14 Project Status - Where Are We Today ● Technology for sterilized poultry manure was designed and developed ● Prototype was manufactured and tested ● Chemical and biological analysis was conducted for experimental batch of biomass obtained after the sterilization process of chicken manure ● Patent application was prepared and submitted

19 19 Summary & Conclusions Fertilizer manufacturing has economical profitability in local industry in agricultural areas, where crop residues and manures used as the feedstock Proposed technology contributes to ‘green’ environment, reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers and improves the quality of agricultural production Feed cost based on poultry manure significantly lower than the traditional animal feed, which might be interesting for the producers of cattle meat Production of equipment based on the proposed technology is feasible, cost-effective and without any environmental harm
