Copy the following sentences: Hello, my name is ________________________, and I’m a seventh grade student at Barber Middle School. In my language arts class, I am conducting an I-Search which is a project where I find out about a topic I’m interested in. I chose the topic of _______________________, and I would like the opportunity to ask you questions about this topic. Are you available for a phone interview or an e-mail interview?

A phrase is two or more words that do not contain the subject- verb pair necessary to form a clause. Phrases can be very short or quite long. Here are two examples: a. Washed with soap and water b. Crunching caramel corn for the entire three-hour long movie last Friday night

VerbPast participlePresent participle WashWashedWashing CrunchCrunchedcrunching ClogCloggedClogging HelpHelpedHelping TrotTrottedTrotting Certain phrases have specific names based on the type of word that begins or governs the word group. Today we will learn about participial phrases.

1.The horse trotting up to the fence hopes that you have an apple or carrot. (Trotting up to the fence modifies the ________horse.) 2. The water drained slowly in the pipe clogged with dog hair. (Clogged with dog hair modifies the _________ pipe.) 3. Eaten by mosquitoes, we wished that we had made hotel, not campsite, reservations. (Eaten by mosquitoes modifies the ______________ we.)

The crying baby drew a long breath and sucked in a spider crouching in the corner of the crib. The mangled pair of sunglasses, bruised face, broken arm, and bleeding knees meant Genette had taken another spill on her mountain bike.

Glazed with barbecue sauce, the rack of ribs lay nestled next to a pile of sweet coleslaw. Mariah risked petting the pit bull wagging its stub tail.

VerbPast participle (add –ed) Present participle (add –ing)

After completing the “Time to Write” sheet, be prepared to share one of your answers with the class.

Paraphrase the following sentence: The elephant is the only animal that cannot jump with all four of its legs off the ground.

What it is What it’s not

Keeping main idea -Plagiarism Using synonyms-Keeping more Starting sentencesthan 15% of with phrases author’s words Putting ideas in different order

Read and reread the text until you have a good understanding of the main idea and the details. Put the text away and write down what you remember without looking at the text Compare the original with the paraphrase: Does it have the same meaning? Did you leave out any essential details? Do you use too many exact words?

Circle all of the words that are repeated in the original and your paraphrase. Are there any you could change? If words are general and unnecessary to switch (for example: wall, or sit) then don’t worry about switching them. If there is a phrase that is either too difficult to translate or just really well-written as is, use quotation marks within your paraphrase. However, these should be used sparingly. Names do not have to be changed.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty together again.

If you don't design your own life plan, chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much. Jim Rohn If you don't design your own life plan, chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much. Jim Rohn

With your partner, decide whether the passage is acceptably paraphrased or if it is plagiarized. If you think it is plagiarized, write an acceptable paraphrase of the passage.

With your partner, read and paraphrase your assigned paragraph about the Super Bowl and chicken wings. Remember to cite the author if you use a direct quote in your paraphrasing. Your paraphrase will be put to the “Google” test to see if you plagiarised.

Paraphrase the following passage. USE A DIRECT QUOTE AND THE AUTHOR’S NAME AS PART OF THE PARAPHRASING. In a child's eyes, a mother is a goddess. She can be glorious or terrible, benevolent or filled with wrath, but she commands love either way. I am convinced that this is the greatest power in the universe. N.K. Jemison

The three most important things to remember about paraphrasing are: 1.______________________ 2.______________________ 3.______________________

These samples are from the same passage as yesterday; however, the attempt at paraphrasing is different. Check to see if proper citation has been given. Are there quotation marks around parts of the passage that take at least three words directly from the original? Do you know WHO said it? Do you know what source was used? Do you know the page number?

Chicken Wings and the Super Bowl If you completed your assigned passage yesterday, we will review it today. Complete a second passage today using the author’s name and quotation marks.

Take out your I-Search notes and the paraphrasing guidelines you wrote yesterday. Paraphrase one of your notes. Show it to a partner for feedback. Show it to the teacher for feedback

Name 3 guidelines to help you paraphrase. Name 2 things to include in your paraphrased work. Name 1 way paraphrasing is different from summarizing.
