Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights. Exodus 24:17 – 18

The LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the people of Israel, that they take for me a contribution. From every man whose heart moves him you shall receive a contribution for me…and let them make a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst. Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make it. (Exodus 25:1 – 2; 8 - 9)

Acacia Wood Acacia Tree in the Negev Acacia Wood comes from Acacia trees which grow well in desert climates like parts of Africa, Australia, and the Middle East. There are thousands of variants of acacia tress. Some believe the acacia wood (“shittim” or “shittah” wood) in the bible comes from, perhaps, the Acacia seyal (the gum-arabic tree), the Acacia torilis or Acacia nilotica These trees grow in the Sinai area. The wood is light, hard, and durable, and grows very black with age. The timer is close-grained and is not readily attacked by insects. Perhaps this is why Septuagint designates acacia as “incorruptible wood”.

And you shall put the mercy seat on the top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony I shall give you. There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark…I will speak with you about all that I will give you and command you. Exodus 25:21-22

And you shall take the garments and put them on Aaron…And you shall set the turban on his head and then take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him…thus you shall ordain Aaron and his sons (29:5 - 7,9)

Then you take one of the rams, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the ram, and you shall kill the ram and take its blood and throw it against the sides of the altar…and burn the whole ram on the altar. It is a burnt offering to the LORD. (Exodus 29:15 – 16)

The Ordination of Israel’s Priests A SEVEN day process Each day a bull was offered as a sin offering to make atonement The altar was to be purified and consecrated The entire process was extensive and complete Aaron and his sons will serve Yahweh as his priest. The book Hebrews will declare that Jesus is our NEW GREAT HIGH PRIEST

There I will meet with the people of Israel, and it shall be sanctified (made holy) by my glory…I will dwell among the people of Israel and will be their God. And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God! Exodus 29:43-46

Altar of Incense Stood in front of the second curtain before the most Holy Place Sweetened the air during the sacrifice It was to represent the prayers of God’s people ascending to heaven; Jesus now caries our prayers

Census Tax This census tax served to bolster the freewill offering raised in chapter 25. Each one who is numbered shall give this: half a shekel as an offering to the LORD. Everyone is who 20 years old and upward. The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, when you give the LORD’s offering to make atonement for your lives…and that it may bring the people of Israel to remembrance before the LORD Exodus 30:13 -15

The Bronze Basin When they go into the Tent of Meeting, or when they come near the altar to minister…they shall wash with water, so that they may not die. They shall wash their hands and feet, so that they may not die. It shall be a statute forever to them… Exodus 30:20 -21

The Master Craftsmen I have filled them with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship…that they may make all that I have commanded you Exodus 31

A Sabbath Reminder #1 Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the LORD, sanctify you. You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut of from among his people. Exodus 31:13 – 14

Exodus 32 – 34 The Golden Calf Time to Leave The Tent of Meeting Moses Makes New Tablets The Covenant Renewed (Again) The Shining Face of Moses

The Golden Calf When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him…”Make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him. Exodus 32:1

The Golden Calf Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves…I have seen them, they are a stiff- necked people. Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, in order that I may make a great nation of you Exodus 32:7, 9 – 10

The Golden Calf Moses PLEADS for mercy on behalf of Israel The LORD RELENTS from bringing disaster Moses GETS REAL ANGRY –He throws the tablets down and breaks them –He takes the CALF and melts it down and makes the people drink it with water He confronts AARON on his sin and idolatry He forms an army out of the sons of LEVI and puts to death about 3000 men that day.

Time to Leave Sinai – 33:1-6 God COMMANDS them to leave and go to the land which he promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob The ANGEL OF THE LORD will go before you Your ENEMIES will be driven out But I will not be with you because you are a stiff- necked people This disastrous word sends them into MOURNING.

The TENT OF MEETING A place that Moses would go to talk with the LORD The pillar cloud would descend into the tent and the LORD would speak with Moses

If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Is in not in your going with us, so that we are distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth? Exodus 33:14 – 16

TWO NEW TABLETS The LORD said to Moses, “Cut for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first, which you broke. Exodus 34:1

The Covenant Renewed (AGAIN)

Don’t make a covenant with pagans Destroy their altars and break their pillars Don’t marry their daughters who worship false gods Don’t make idols Keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread Remember the Sabbath Moses stays with the LORD forty days and forty nights.

When Moses came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God…Aaron and all the people were afraid to come near him…But Moses called to him, and Moses talked to him….when Moses finished speaking with them he put a veil on his face. Exodus 34

Moses and His Shining Face Moses would remove the veil to speak before the LORD, share with Israel, and then put the veil back on Jesus and the Mountain of Transfiguration See 2 Corinthians 3:12 – 18

Exodus 35 – 40 Sabbath Reminder #3 The Construction of the Tabernacle Priestly Garments The Tabernacle Assembled The Glory of the LORD

Sabbath Reminder - #3 These are the things that the LORD has commanded you to do. Six days work shall be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. You shall kindle not fire in all your dwelling places on the Sabbath day. Exodus 34:2-3

The Contribution Moses said to all the congregation of the people…Take from among you a contribution to the LORD. Whoever is a of a generous heart, let him bring the LORD’s contribution…let every skillful craftsman among you come and make all that the LORD has commanded…and all the congregation came, everyone whose heart and spirit were moved. Exodus 35

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS Exodus 35:30 – 40:32

How Does Exodus Point to Jesus?

The life of Moses is a “type” or “picture of Christ. Moses pleads his case before Pharaoh and Jesus pleads our case before God Aaron is the first high priest and Jesus is our Great High Priest Jesus is the Passover Lamb, the final, perfect Sacrifice for our sins The manna that fell from heaven, that sustained Israel for 40 years, represents Jesus, the Bread of Life

The apostle Paul compares the rock in Exodus 17:1 – 17 with Christ (1 Corinthians 10:1 – 4) The day of Sabbath rest represents Jesus, in whom is our eternal rest Jesus is the mercy seat found on the ark of the covenant where we go to find atonement Jesus is the light of the world, depicted by the lampstand in the tabernacle Jesus sacrificed Himself on the altar of the cross, just as Aaron made sacrifices on the altar of the burnt offering.
