1 U.S. History Chapter 15 Election of 1932 Franklin Delano Roosevelt (D) would run for the Presidency against Hoover (R) in 1932. Besides the fact that Hoover was not well liked, FDR had three things going for him.

2 U.S. History Chapter 15 Patriotism FDR was a very patriotic man who loved his country. This was very important during the depression because it gave the people a sense that "we are all in this together as Americans."

3 U.S. History Chapter 15 Overcoming Polio Polio is a crippling disease that, in the 1930's, was equated with death. It wasn't a question of whether or not the disease would kill someone, but when would the disease win. FDR, in spite of polio was running for the Presidency of the United States. People saw FDR as a man who cheated death. They also were forced to re-examine their own situations. They may be poor, but at least they could walk, and didn't have polio. FDR did not complain, or try to draw sympathy for his condition. He simply was a rugged individual and the people got the message. (actions speak louder than words)

4 U.S. History Chapter 15 Eleanor Franklin Roosevelt's wife Eleanor was very instrumental in her husbands campaign and Presidency. FDR could not travel extensively so Eleanor did and conveyed the mood of the country to her husband. She dealt with the bonus army and P.R. very well.
