THEODORE ROOSEVELT’S IMPACT ON FOREIGN POLICY

Warm-Up  Complete the left half of the Venn Diagram Monroe DoctrineRoosevelt Corollary

Recap!  Who won the election of 1900?  What were their main platforms?

1901  McKinley is assassinated months after being inaugurated  TR succeeds him in office  What can TR’s Rough Rider predict about the type of President he’ll be?  TR is well-liked by imperialists but criticized for breaking tradition of noninvolvement in global politics

Big Stick Diplomacy  POLITICAL CARTOON

Panama Canal  Colombia refused to agree to US terms for digging through its territory  TR supported a revolt in Panama in order to acquire the land  The rebellion succeeded and the new government signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903, granting control of the land to the US

The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine Latin American countries were falling behind in debt repayments to European powers. In 1904, instead of letting Europeans intervene, Roosevelt declared that the US would intervene instead.

Carrying a Big-Stick  Arrange diplomatic conference during Russo- Japanese War (1905)  “Gentlemen’s Agreement” where Roosevelt persuaded California to repeal discriminatory laws and Japan secretly restricts emigration to the US  Root-Takahira Agreement (1908)- mutual respect for Pacific possessions between US and Japan, and support for Open Door Policy in China

The Great White Fleet  picture

Taft’s Dollar Diplomacy  Won election as Roosevelt’s successor  Expansionist foreign policy based on financial investments, not naval power  Promoted US trade by supporting American enterprises abroad  Succeeded in securing American participation investing in railroads in China  Sent marines to Nicaragua to protect American investments. (they stayed from 1912-1933)

Wilson’s Moral Diplomacy  Wished to correct wrongful policies of the past 1. Philippines-Jones Act of 1916 granted territorial status, a bill of rights, universal male suffrage, and independence as soon as a stable government was established 2. Puerto Rico- US citizenship granted to all inhabitants in 1917 3. Panama Canal- US ships are no longer exempt from paying toll

Moral Diplomacy?  Wilson used US Marines to straighten out many troubles in Latin America  Kept marines in Nicaragua, ordered troops into Haiti in 1915 and the Dominican Republic in 1916  Wilson asked for an arms embargo against the military dictatorship of General Victoriano Huerta in Mexico in 1914, later blockading, and then occupying, the port of Vera Cruz

INQUIRY LESSON Would Theodore Roosevelt have entered into the Vietnam War?

Make a Hypothesis  Using what you know about TR, make a hypothesis about the question: “Would Theodore Roosevelt have entered into the Vietnam War?”

Data Sets  In groups of four, each member gets a document.  Each member shares their document so the team can fill out their data set.  After each document is shared, revise your hypothesis and record it on the data set

How did TR impact foreign policy in the United States?
