1 Aim of this lesson today:- To perform a steam treatment By the end of this lesson you will be able to:- List the seven main skin types Identify the main characteristics Define the difference between a exfoliation scrub and peel Perform a Cleanse, tone, exfoliate with hot towels and extraction

3 Skin types Normal Dry ( Alipoid) Dehydrated ( lacking water) Greasy Combination Sensitive Mature

4 Different skin characteristics Normal – Looks clear, healthy, even texture, no congestion, small pores, soft and supple Dry – Flaky, itchy, small pores, pale in colour, matte, dull, course, uneven texture, lacking oil, premature wrinkles, tight Dehydrated - Orange peel effect, superficial flaking, fine lines, broken capillaries, prone to premature ageing and sensitivity Greasy – Open pores, sallow (yellow), shiny, high moisture content, good tone, course thick epidermis, prone to spots & congestion Combination- Combination of skin types, Greasy on t zone, Dry on cheeks, Milia, Broken capillaries Sensitive – Rosy cheeks, prone to allergic reactions, Itchy, fine broken capillaries, rashes, spots, skin feels warm to touch Mature - Extra dry, loss of contours & firmness, skin looks sallow and grey, puffy, broken capillaries, thin skin, crepey, lined, Irregular pigmentation

5 Exfoliation products Facial Scrubs - cleansing milks containing granular material such as olive stones, oatmeal. An abrasive effect on the skin which loosens dead skin cells. Use on all skin types except sensitive Peeling creams- water soluble emulsion containing clay and natural biological ingredients to help slough off skin cells. Suitable for all skin types especially dry, mature and sensitive Alpha Hydroxy acids- derived from fruits, sugar cane and milk. AHA shed dead skin cells & intercellular glue that hold skin cells together. Creams are available without prescription but can increase the skins vulnerability to the sun Retinoic Acid – decreases the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, smoothes skin & makes complexion rosy. Side effects occur as dry, flaky skin, increases skin sensitivity to the sun, perfumes and cosmetics. Other exfoliating treatments:- Dermabrasion, laser, chemical peels
