2 Current Status in PF Five (5) communities of practice are already established in the PF region. Marketing – SNV /IFAD – based in Kampala, Uganda Agriculture and Water Management – ICRISAT/IFAD based in Nbi, Kenya Managing for Impact - SMIP/IFAD Rural Finance – AFRACA/IFAD, Nbi, Kenya Land Tenure – Managed from IFAD Gender Mainstreaming – FAO/IFAD

3 Current Status Cont.. Other knowledge initiatives include:- AFRACA – Pan-African rural finance Face-to-face interaction with Programmes Rural Knowledge Network – FAO/IFAD Linking Local Learners –FAO/IFAD First Mile Project – AMSDP, TZ/IFAD E-newsletter – PF Initiative

6 Current Status Cont.. Survey showed a gap between the need to access knowledge and grass-root availability of knowledge to share. E.g., while 89.8% needed lessons learned for their daily work, only 38.8% generated lessons learned.

7 Opportunities & Challenges Country office and direct supervision by IFAD is expected to improve the learning Regional implementation workshop has facilitated some networking between programme Every thematic group have worked independently hence no learning across the thematic areas Learning across country programmes has not been there but improving now

8 Lessons Learnt Set up a joint web-based platform in the form of IFADAfrica – each community have developed their own site – need for a one stop KM shop Process documentation to bring out the lessons learnt for knowledge sharing within the region and develop a competitive process of selecting the best lesson to be uploaded to the poverty portal.

9 Lessons Learnt Cont.. Cross learning between the thematic communities along the areas of common interest Possible cross learning with sister organization FIDAfrique through joint knowledge sharing along the thematic areas, exchange visits, linkage and synergy Support and promotion for discussion forum moderators for each of the community of practice to encourage knowledge sharing

10 Lessons Learnt Cont.. Need to financially support international technical assistance to the community of practice as and when required (on a need basis) Assist the programme develop communication strategy in order to effectively implement their activities Provide for translation of key learning documents to be made available to a wider audience in Africa

11 Sustainability of Network User driven, inclusive, bottom-up organically growing knowledge management network based on a system development Move away from an organization-centred KM systems to pooling knowledge in a broader and more inclusive way Generate and/or co-produce knowledge to share costs

12 Sustainability Cont… Facilitate the building of partnerships, linkages and synergies Foster bottom-up conversations Keep knowledge creation close to the knowledge creators/owners Resource mobilization from broad base of development partners- need a clear fundraising strategy
