1 Migration Manager for Active Directory & File Servers
Presenter Name

2 Common Active Directory Consolidation Challenges
Progress and status is critical to project management, but can be incomplete or missing altogether Technical difficulty of project requires expensive senior IT resources Avoiding disruption to end users is key to success and organizational changes can drive new standards Pre-migration assessments lessen migration issues, but difficult to perform thoroughly Maintaining coexistence throughout the migration is complicated Server migrations often need to accompany domain migrations, prolonging the project There are some technical challenges that many organizations are faced with when performing a large migration. The migration could involve thousands of users and computers and hundreds of servers. In these cases, completing a migration does not occur in a single night nor a weekend. It’s phased out and performed over weeks or months. During this time period, coexistence must be maintained throughout the migration. When we refer to coexistence we are looking at two different perspectives: Continuity of access: end users are able to access their information when they need to as well as not accessing information when they shouldn’t. Many changes occur which may impact users access through the duration of a migration like changes to groups which grant access as well as password changes. Maintaining both environments to ensure user’s don’t lose access or gain too much access is critical. Administration: there are additional complexities with trying to manage a user’s access based on which environment the user is active in. You could have users that need access to the same resources but they span across both source and target environments meaning some have been migrated while others have not. This should not impact the end users but in this situation unless administration occurs in both environments then it’s difficult to maintain ensure users are losing and gaining access as they should be. Difficult to perform a pre-migration assessment – organizations lack the visibility in identifying stale accounts, computers being used by individuals, configuration issues that would cause the migration to fail, duplicate accounts, etc. Many of this information must be collected and reported on to properly plan for a migration. If these are unknown at the time of migration, then it will prevent you from finishing the migration on time and therefore within budget. New standards require mass naming changes - organizations tend to have different IT policies such as naming for groups and user ids. Some use standards like only 8 characters while others may chose to implement firstname.lastname, etc. Regardless of the policy if companies have implemented different policies, it requires a massive change so the newly migrated accounts adhere to the appropriate policy. Lack critical information for project management – In order to ensure the migration is on time, project managers require up to date status on the migration project. Key information like # of accounts, computers, groups that have been migrated are essential to verify and adjust accordingly if the project is not on track. No capabilities to allow junior level IT staff to assist with the migration while reducing risk – Completing a migration is resource intensive and requires many man hours. Having the ability to allow jr level admins to perform the process without risk is a major challenge as the process normally requires granting more privileges to these individuals to assist in the process. Zero impact on end users - The most important aspect of migrations is not impacting end users which will adversely affect the business. If the business is impacted, there will be a cost associated to it but unfortunately, it’s hard to quantify the impact. Some examples of failed migrations and the impact that we’ve heard are a banking customer service representative not being able to access their applications to provide a customer with some key account information. End customer not happy about the delay and ultimately taking their business elsewhere. That customer’s business was substantial to the bank and directly impacted their bottom line. This is just one example but think about your business and the impact if your end users could not access the appropriate information to perform their job.

3 What if… You could show up to minute migration status for management review? You could eliminate additional off-hours tasks for your migration team? Your migration was seamless to end users, and without requiring manually touching every system in the environment? You could off-load much of the migration work to junior IT staff, freeing senior staff to concentrate on managing the project through successful completion? You finished your migration within budget and ahead of schedule? You finished your migration within budget and ahead of schedule? Customer envisioning completing a migration project within budget and ahead of schedule. Any examples of failed migrations with customers having to work extra hours and backed out migrations can help solidify this point. You could show up to minute migration status for management review? Being able to know up to the minute status of the current project helps provide visibility and keep the project on schedule. You could eliminate additional off-hours tasks for your migration team? Since migrations impact end users, some customers are forced to work during off hours to complete the migration. How would you like to perform a majority of the migration tasks during the day. Users were offline or lost data as a result of your migration? Imagine the impact if your end user’s are not able to access the information that they require to perform their job. Also, due to the lost desktop experience, they could be impacted and feel as if they’ve lost their data. Many help desk calls will be initiated and can slow down the migration as word spreads of the negative impact. What if you forced a reboot to occur and the user didn’t have the opportunity to save their work since they were on a “coffee break”? We’ve all lost data at some point and understand the frustrations behind having to try and repeat the work that has already been done. It’s beyond frustrating… You had to manually update each user’s workstation Physically touching every single computer to ensure it’s updated, can take a tremendous amount of time and effort. What if you can automate this process and perform it from a central location with no impact to the end users?

4 Migration Manager for AD & File Servers
ZeroIMPACT AD migration and consolidation solution that can now migrate file servers along with domains. Supports coexistence throughout migration Ensures secure migration execution Provides flexible, comprehensive management Reduces costs and ensures zero network downtime Removes the security and configuration headaches of file server migration “It was absolutely critical that the migration be as seamless as possible, eliminating impact on users. We are responsible to our shareholders, and downtime equals money.” Ken Borthwick, Director of Technology Services for Movado ZeroIMPACT AD migration and consolidation solution that can migrate file servers along with domains by combining two of Dell’s award-winning products: Migration Manager for AD and SecureCopy This is a key differentiator for Dell because we can do both. Supports co-existence throughout migration Synchronization of passwords, group memberships and other attributes allow administration to occur in either environment while keeping both environments up to date with latest changes Regardless of where the user resides source or target environments, they will have the access that they need to perform their jobs. Ensure secure migration execution and management Migration of not only objects but the security applied to those objects as well Groups and memberships migrated and synchronized to ensure consistency and security Provides flexible, comprehensive management Reduce costs and ensure zero network downtime Uninterrupted Workflow allowing migration to occur while users are working and segments the migration workload by performing key processes during the day and reboots are done after hours. Reduced workload with distributed processing Ensures fast, safe and easy file server migrations with Secure Copy Security stays intact when data is migrated to file servers or NAS/SAN devices Flexible migration that allows administrators to control how, what and when data is migrated Automation removes the headache of complex, tedious and manual file server migration tasks Reports are available to help manage data migration projects Thorough Migration Planning Identify accounts and groups for migration and create migration schedule Project management with up to date status on who has been migrated and synchronized as well as computers processed Delegation provides organization to leverage jr. level admin staff without risks as only certain functionality will be exposed to these individuals Undo/Rollback provides assurances that if something does go wrong, you can revert back to a previous state Comprehensive resource updating allows us to update many resources that exists in your environment such as SQL, Systems Management Server/System Center Configuration Manager, SharePoint, File/Print services, registry, user profiles, etc… Secure and configure file servers In just a few clicks, migrate data to file servers or NAS/SAN devices without reconfiguring NTFS security or shares.

5 Migration Manager for AD & File Servers
Active Directory content Users Computers Servers Permissions File server content Files Folders Printers Shares NTFS security Dell Software “has made our server migration painless and seamless to our end users – they never knew that a product exists that can automate all the functions necessary to conduct a migration with file shares and permissions intact. I’ll never go back to manually writing scripts again.” Jim Toy, Director of Information Technology Make-A-Wish Foundation of America To better serve our Active Directory migration customers, Migration Manager for AD now contains a file server migration component called Secure Copy. It provides an automated and secure solution for migrating: Files Folders Printers shares And more Without the use of agents or scripts. The file server migration solution: - enables you to migrate data from one server to another, consolidate file servers or move data to an NAS/SAN device It also provides intuitive reporting that empowers you to manage data migration projects at any level of complexity.
