Non-Fiction & Research Test Review Monday Feb. 18 th 1 st, A4, 5 th Tuesday Feb. 19 th B4

Citation is the information about one source Works Cited is a list of citations in alphabetical order. Sometimes called a Bibliography. Parenthetical Citation or Documentation – First word of a citation in parenthesis – Page # if applicable “On a daily average 160,000 children miss school because they fear they will be bullied if they attend classes” (Hopkins 3). Know the Difference Citation is the information about one source Works Cited is a list of citations in alphabetical order. Sometimes called a Bibliography. Parenthetical Citation or Documentation – First word of a citation in parenthesis – Page # if applicable “On a daily average 160,000 children miss school because they fear they will be bullied if they attend classes” (Hopkins 3).

When are Parenthetical Citations Needed? – after an original idea from a source (paraphrase) – after exact wording copied from a source (quote) – after a summary of ideas in a source – after factual information that is not common knowledge in the field or discipline ***Common factual information that one might find in an almanac, fact book, or dictionary need not be cited.

Works Cited Hopkins, Ellen. ""Why Do We Celebrate Bullying?"" Dear Bully: 70 Authors Tell Their Stories. Ed. Hall Megan. Kelley and Carrie Jones. New York, NY: HarperTeen, 2011. Print. 5 Quote from Book with Author “On a daily average 160,000 children miss school because they fear they will be bullied if they attend classes.” “On a daily average 160,000 children miss school because they fear they will be bullied if they attend classes” (Hopkins 3). Notice the Period on the Outside of the Parenthesis

Quote from Article with Author “The larger audience, the around the clock availability of digital media, and the ease of dispersing embarrassing photos or videos, all of these affordances may contribute to a larger and more severe impact of cyber bullying over traditional bullying” ( ). Uhls

Quote from Article without Author

“Some researchers talk about the "circle of bullying" to define both those directly involved in bullying and those who actively or passively assist the behavior or defend against it” ( ). “Roles” Why are there quotation marks around Roles?

First Word of the Citation Many people disapproved of the way the recovery was handled after this national tragedy (“Hurricane”). What if more than one citation on your Works Cited starts with the same word… “Hurricane Katrina Disaster” “Hurricane Katrina Recovery” Many people disapproved of the way the recovery was handled after this national tragedy (“Hurricane Katrina Recovery”).

Is this a good paraphrase? “Not only do many Americans tolerate bullying, they stand in the wings and cheer it on. In fact, there lately seems to be a real celebration of violent attacks against people who are different. If you don’t believe me, spend a little time reading the comments following a news story about, oh, say, a mosque burning on U.S. soil” (Hopkins 5). Not only do many Americans accept bullying, they cheer it on. Lately, there seems to be a celebration of vicious outbreaks against people who are not the same. ( ) Hopkins 5

What makes this one better? Not only do many U.S. citizens accept bullying, they cheer it on. Recently, there seems to be a celebration of vicious outbreaks against people who are different. (Hopkins 5) Comments made by Americans after a mosque was burned in the U.S. suggest that many people accept and even encourage bullying and violence against other people (Hopkins 5).

Plagiarism Use of another student’s work Purchase and submission of a “canned” research paper Copying passages into your paper without documentation Copying a key, well-worded phrase without documentation Placing specific ideas of others into your own words without documentation Inadequate or missing citations Missing quotations marks Incomplete or missing Works Cited entries
