UNSPSC is the result of a merger of the United Nations' Common Coding System (UNCCS) and Dun & Bradstreet's Standard Products and Services Codes (SPSC). The merger was completed in 1998 through the efforts of a team of analysts and researchers from both D&B and the Inter-Agency Procurement Services Organization (IAPSO) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). UNSPSC is considered an open standard, and companies and other organizations worldwide are encouraged to apply the codes in their business systems.
