3 I. Bushido

4 A. Bushido ”The way of the warrior” code of honor that all samurai lived by. Bushido emphasized loyalty and honor above all others. – Loyalty to the Lord was vital and all samurai would gladly die an honorable death for their Daimyo. – Death was welcomed over dishonor. Bushido allowed the feudal system to exist as long as it did.

6 C. Seppuku Ritual suicide as part of samurai bushido. Reason for seppuku: – Dying with honor-volunteering for death rather than fall into the hands of the enemy. – Dying with dishonor-punishment for a serious crime or reasons that brought shame. Seppuku a ritual death: wore all white, eat favorite meal, and people watched

7 D. Women Women could be samurai Samurai wives had to provide food and supplies for the home, managed crops, oversaw servants, financial business, educating kids, and defend home in times of war. Sometimes joined men in battle Followed bushido and seppuku (values were loyalty, bravery, and to fulfill duty of revenge.) Weapons – Daggers kept in sleeves – Naginata – long curved swords (considered the most suitable female weapon). The art of fighting with a naginata is called naginatajutsu

8 II. Chivalry

9 A. Code of Chivalry - code of honor that European knights lived by. Chivalry valued: 1.Fear God and maintain his Church 2.Serve the lord 3.Protect weak/defenseless 4.Live by honor and for glory 5.Fight for the welfare of all 6.Obey those placed in authority 7.Respect honor of women

10 B. Chivalry Knights were expected to have great strength and skill in combat. – They were also expected to temper their aggressive side with a gentlemanly side. Knights would take vows or oaths that were sworn in during Knighthood ceremonies that would emphasize the values of Chivalry. Codes of Chivalry were publicized in poems, ballads (songs), and literally works. The Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table further strengthened the idea of a Code of Chivalry.

11 C. Women Women could not be knights Were though of as weak and defenseless. Needed to be protected and honored.
