2 Osmosis Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across cell membrane from an area of low water concentration to an area of higher concentration. Prepared by Abeer Alhabash

3 It is known that red blood cells surrounded by a semi-permeable membrane works to allow the exchange of different materials to and from the cell to the idea of the experience depends on the mixing of red blood cells in one of these three solutions: Isotonic Solution (0.9 % NaCl). Hypertonic Solution ( 1.5 NaCl). Hypotonic Solution ( distilled water). Observe the morphology of RBCs in different solutions and the effect of osmosis in each. Prepared by Abeer Alhabash

5 Procedure: 1- Mix very drop small blood with 2-3 drops isotonic solution on a clean glass slide and then put cover on the slide and check under the microscope. 2-Repeat previous step twice the: A- first time using hypertonic solution. B- second using distilled water. 3-Observe the morphology of RBCs and draw several cells in your notes. Prepared by Abeer Alhabash

6 Observation: 1- Hypotonic If the medium has a lower concentration of water than the cell (a very dilute solution) the cell will gain water by osmosis. The cell will swell. 2- Isotonic If the medium is exactly the same water concentration as the cell there will be no net movement of water across the cell membrane. The cell will stay the same size. 3- Hypertonic If the medium has a higher concentration of water than the cell (a very concentrated solution) the cell will lose water by osmosis.
