15 MTM: Research groeps: Composite Materials The Composite Materials Group has four research focuses: Composites on Micro- and Nano- Level: “engineering” by intelligent placement of nano-reinforcements Composites on Macro- and Meso- Level: experimental and modelling studies of textile composites, random fibre composites, textiles, porous materials and biomaterials Natural and biobased composites: fibre morphology and mechanical performance, fibre-matrix interfacial adhesion, novel fibre processing methods Processing and product development: concurrent optimisation of products and manufacturing processes

16 MTM: Research groeps: Metals and Alloys The Metals and Alloys group deals mainly with the plasticity of advanced metallic materials. Its activities include: Analysing and modelling of microstructure and texture evolution during plastic deformation Deriving physics-based constitutive laws for their mechanical behaviour Developing dedicated characterisation methods for their complex microstructures Participating in the development of innovative deformation processes

17 MTM: Research groeps: Materials Performance and Non-Destructive Testing The Materials Performance and Non-destructive Testing group investigates the long-term behaviour and reliability of materials. Damage development during different loading types is studied, using a number of Non-destructive and advanced monitoring techniques: Acoustic emission, real-time microfocus X-ray radiography, nano- and micro-computed tomography, eddy currents, ultrasound, optical fibre sensors etc… Besides polymers, ceramics and metals, research is also dealing with advanced materials such as particulate or fibre reinforced composites and cellular materials.
