Qualification tests to classify a protector as one or the other have been developed. Consistent with this differentiation, marking has been revised to allow identification of the protector as Basic Impact or High Impact.

The 1989 version of the standard addressed selection from more of an overall awareness point of view. As noted earlier in the paper, the standard now entails different levels of impact resistance. This is a significant issue since more of the onus in regards to selection of the protector will now fall on the responsible SH&E professional to ensure that a quality hazard assessment has been conducted.
