Entry Task 9/17- use your Venn diagram and notes. 1) Write out a strong, specific claim about a significant similarity between the reality of ship breaking and the fictional world of ship breaking in the novel. 2) Write out a strong, specific claim about a significant difference between reality and fiction.
2
Discussion What makes a strong claim of similarity: – Significant, not vague/general (there are environmental issues). What makes a strong claim of difference: – Don’t compare “apples to meat:” they need to be connected in some way so the difference is significant. – It should be something that is possible: Saying in the novel New Orleans had become a drowned city, or there are half-men in the novel won’t work.
3
Style A claim of similarity does not have to say “_____ is similar in reality and in the novel.” “One significant similarity between the novel and real life is _______” A claim of similarity can be worded in a more stylistic/natural way: “The novel Ship Breaker accurately portrays the reality of shipbreaking through its use of ________.” “The novel Ship Breaker accurately depicts ______ of ship breaking.” “Bacigalupi used the reality of ________ in his fictional work.
4
Comparison Paragraph Remember, in a complete paragraph there is… Main claim: – “Both the Swiffer and a broom remove unwanted dirt from hard floors.” Evidence: – The Swiffer uses a microfiber that grabs on to dirt, removing it from the floor and attaching it to the fiber. – The broom uses bristles that push and collect the dirt into one pile that can be swept into a dust pan and thrown away. Commentary: – This microfiber is very effective on the small particles of dirt and grime, allowing for a quick sweep up of everyday dust. – These bristles and dust pan, allows for the removal of small and large particles of dirt and garbage from the floor.

Difference claims They don’t have to be complete differences. – You can claim that the novel exaggerated an aspect of ship breaking. “In his novel, Bacigalupi exaggerated _______ of ship breaking.” – It can be the author downplayed an aspect- rate of death/injury. “Despite depicting the dangers of ship breaking, Bacigalupi downplayed______” – It can be something is left out or ignored, but it’s hard to prove. “The novel Ship Breaker did not address ________ of ship breaking.”
6
Two paragraphs: one comparison, one contrast. Bring in draft for feedback tomorrow. Each paragraph needs to be complete, with a minimum of a claim, 4 pieces of evidence, and commentary (4 pieces of evidence as you are using “4” sources). – Make sure your main point is a strong claim that is focused on one “general” similarity/difference. – Cite your evidence sources. “In Ship Breaker the author… “….” (16). In the documentary…
