4 Identity Theft What is it? A crime that occurs when a person steals your personal information and uses it for self- gain.

5 Ways to Prevent Identity theft Look out for shoulder surfers who listen in or look over someone’s shoulder to see information they can use to steal your identity. ATM use. Only use Bank ATMs. Clean wallet out regularly Do not sign credit cards write on back see ID. Forgery writing a false signature, creating a false doculment, or altering a document for the illegal benefit of the person making the forgery.

6 Ways to Prevent Identity theft con’t. Do not post vacation plans on Social Networking sites referring to a broad class of websites and services that allow you to connect with friends, family, and colleagues online, as well as meet people with similar interests or hobbies. Blogging a frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts do not divulge PII, use handles

7 Ways to Prevent Identity theft con’t Be wary of Peer to Peer file sharing programs. These are applications that runs on a personal computer and shares files with other users across the internet While they provide you the ability to exchange files, they also open you up to unauthorized access on your computer

9 What information should be kept secured Personal Identification Information (PII) Complete name and address Date of Birth Social Security number A unique identifier issued by the Social Security Adminsration to all individuals keep in a safe locked place Never keep in your wallet Social Security Card Passwords Keep secured log of all account numbers and copies of credit and debit cards at home in secured place

10 What to do with identify information that is no longer needed SHRED EVERYTHING Use cross shredders to get rid of all mail that contains identifying information. This type of shredder prevent puzzling information back together. Junk Mail Account statements anything with your name, address, phone numbers old tax statements. Report cards Why? Dumpster Divers those who go into the trash for documents that can be used for identity theft

11 Ways to keep technology secure Keep Computer Security Software updated Firewalls software that blocks your computer information from an outside source. Do not share Passwords. Create strong passwords using numbers and letters in upper and lower case. Do not respond to spam emails or text messages even to cancel Look out for Scams trickery used to gain information. Do not participate in online surveys that require you to provide personal information. Be wary of Phishing scams that try to trick you into giving your SSN and other personal information to them.

12 What to do if you suspect Fraud. File a police report get a copy of the report. Place a Fraud (a type of crime used to gain servicies, money, or information) alert to the 3 Credit Reporting Agencies 90 day alert that can be extended to 7 yrs. Contact Creditors Close accounts you know were jeopardized Alert your bank Report to social security administration if ss card was lost or stolen If needed contact a credit counselor

13 Collection Agencies Businesses or attorneys whose job is to collect money owed by “you” to another business. You have rights under the Fair Debt Collection and Practices Act about they can Can Act. 14 What about those that steal your Identity Perpetrator is the criminal or imposter the person using your information or stealing your information for his gain. The imposter is someone that is pretending to be another person. Repeat offenders and those committing highly damaging Identity theft crimes is a Felony and is punishable by long prison terms.

16 Keep your Credit Report in good standing Credit report is a kind of report card about your credit history Don’t supply phone for some else in your name they cannot get a phone because they have bad credit. Don’t loan a credit card or debit card to a friend. they probably have bad credit and cannot Don’t cosign for any cell phone, utility account, care loan or credit card. Never loan your drivers license or ID to anyone. If they commit a misdemeanor which is a crime punishable by a fine and or ounty jail time you will be the offender, if your ID or license is used.
