2 SPI 0601.1.1 Identify the correct use of nouns (i.e., common/proper, singular/plural, possessives) and pronouns (i.e., agreement, subject, object) within context.  I can define a common noun and a proper noun.  I can identify common and proper nouns.  I can define singular and plural nouns.  I can recognize singular and plural nouns.  I can construct plural nouns correctly by adding –s or –es.

3 Noun  A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea.

4 Person Write three examples on your notes.

5 Place Write three examples on your notes.

6 Thing Write three examples on your notes.

7 Idea  Abstract nouns cannot be seen or touched in the same way as concrete nouns such as chair, table, dog etc.  Abstract nouns are ideas, feelings or qualities such as: love, hate, kindness, fear, anger, imagination, courage, intelligence, loneliness, happiness, sadness, bravery, cowardice, embarrassment, joy, beauty, ugliness, confidence, luck, misfortune, mischief, bitterness, justice, injustice, grief, boredom, cheerfulness. Write three examples on your notes.

9 Singular and Plural Nouns  Singular noun - names one person, one place, one thing, or one idea.  Plural Noun – names more than one person, place, thing, or idea.

10 Plural Nouns  To make most nouns plural add: _s  Examples: Dogs, Cats, Girls, Chairs, Pencils

11 Plural Nouns  If a noun ends in s, ss, x, ch, or sh, add es to make it plural.  Examples: Boxes, Foxes, Grasses, Churches, Bushes, Gases.

12 Plural Nouns  If a noun ends with a consonant and y, change the y to i and add es.  Baby – Babies Lady – Ladies Spy – Spies  If a noun ends in a vowel and y, add s.  Turkey – Turkeys Boy – Boys Toy - Toys

14 Common Nouns  Common nouns are nouns that refer to any person, place, or thing.  Example: dog, cat, car, town

15 Proper Nouns  A proper noun is a specific name of a place, a person, or a thing.  The first letter of a proper noun is always represented by a capital letter. Examples: German Shepherd, Calico, Cadillac CTS, Bean Station

16 Write the plural form of the following words:  1. couch  2. glass  3. chair  4. shoe  5. horse  6. truck  7. shirt  8. turkey  9. baby
