1 Lesson 4 – Lift off or Abort Mission Our emotional responses to situations can help us know when there is a problem that needs to be addressed If we ignore our emotions and are unaware of a conflict, the conflict can escalate. If we hold our emotions inside, they can simmer We can create conflict by exploding or taking our emotions out on someone else

4 Step 1 – Know What Triggers Your Anger –Anger is elicited, or triggered, by many different kinds of events, situations and thoughts –What makes one person angry may not make someone else angry –Each of us has our own se to triggers for our anger and these may change depending on the circumstances

5 Anger Management Step 2 – Recognize your anger –Each of us responds, physiologically, to our emotions including anger –What makes one person angry may not make someone else angry –Each of us has our own set of triggers for our anger and these may change depending on the circumstances

6 Anger Management Step 3- Choose to do something to cool off – –People who act impulsively when they are angry often get verbally or physically aggressive or they withdraw –People who get verbally or physically aggressive may hurt themselves or others –People who withdraw often stay angry –Take time to cool off and deal with the emotion and the situation as constructively as possible

7 Anger Management Signs that someone may have a problem with anger –A person angry frequently –A person stays angry for a long time – hours or days –A person plots retaliation –A person becomes physically aggressive –A person allows anger to ruin a relationship –A person takes out anger on someone or something not involved in the conflict –A person frequently feels as though he or she is treated unjustly or unfairly

8 Anger Management Benefits of Listening - –Lowers intensity of emotion –Promotes thinking about the conflict in a way that might lead to resolving it –Provides another person’s perspective –Promote thinking about possible solutions

9 Anger Management Being a Good Listener Includes – –Give the speaker his or her full attention –Stops what he or she is doing –Looks at the speaker –Asks questions to clarify what the speaker is sharing –Restates what the speaker says to be sure he or she understands
