3 Johannes Gutenberg According to an A&E television panel in 1999 Invented the printing press in 1454 Argued that without Gutenberg, no great thinkers of Renaissance would have emerged

4 Objectives & Essential Questions Objectives Make a list of the effects of the printing press on the Renaissance Use document-based evidence to support an argument for what the most important consequence of the printing press Essential Questions How did the printing press affect the Renaissance? What was the most important consequence of the printing press?

5 Background on the Printing Press Read and annotate the “background essay” When you’re finished, answer the guiding questions Guiding Questions: – What was the greatest event in human communication before the printing press? Why? – How did the printing press change the way books were made? – What was the first book printed by Gutenberg?

6 Document Rotation Divide into 6 groups Each group will get 5 minutes to analyze their document and complete the graphic organizer When we are done with the document rotation, you must decide on the most important consequence of the printing press

7 Class Debrief: What were the consequences of the printing press? Doc 1 - Copying of books became faster Doc 2 – Spread of printing presses spread books/learning across Europe Doc 6 – Knowledge of the New World spread quickly across Europe Doc 8 – Classical learning rediscovered by a wider audience in Europe; vernacular translations spread Doc 9 – Modern ideas spread quickly and on a large scale Doc 10 – Scholars like Newton used greater access to Classical and Modern texts to help advance their own ideas and thinking
