1 Smart & Quality Flash Module
SQFlash Product Line Roadmap & Sales Kit Embedded Core Group H2, 2011

2 What Do Customers Find in the Market?
Cost Quality Higher Cost Longer Lead Time Industrial-grade focus Company Unstable Quality No Security Features Lack Longevity Weak Technical Support Commercial-grade focus Company ?? We can simply find that the current market is formed by two kinds of company, Commercial focusing and Industrial focusing. In the commercial area, the quality is not controlled, you will never know which kind of flash IC they applied in your flash module. Not mentioning the lack of technical support and almost impossible to have further customization. On the other side of industrial focusing territory, they can do much more definitely, but they also charges more. Wouldn’t it be great if we can have a high quality storage module and still keep the cost as low as possible? That’s why we present the SQFlash~

3 What We Provide… High Quality Flash with security features, which are customers really need. At least 3 years longevity Specifications defined and controlled Flexible firmware and software support Shorter Lead Time Lower cost & Higher Quality With SQFlash, we can provide… High Quality Flash with security features, that customers really need. We know that customers care about long-term support, so we provide at least 3 years longevity. For the quality, all of our products have been tested with popular Advantech platforms to ensure its reliability and compatibility. With all above, we still do our best to make it not expensive at all!! For example, the price of NAND Flash is raising recently due to the earthquake in Japan, but so far, we still hold the current price with our vendor. In short, we are not only providing a product, but a really cost efficient storage solution.

4 H/W Superiority – Reliable Flash Chip
Adopt reliable and high performance SLC Chip SLC physical erase cycle limitation is 100k (MLC only 10K) Write speed of SLC is double faster than MLC SLC Flash is single layer chip which provides better performance and reliability. SQFlash use Toshiba SLC to provide more reliable solutions.

5 H/W Superiority – Power Failure Protection
When the power voltage is lower than 2.9V SQFlash will keep running to avoid data written wrong because of the low power voltage. When power fails during controller IC is writing data Controller IC will judge if it completed one page written before power failure. Drop incomplete Page Stop Writing Power cycling is one of the most important criteria for industrial flash storage. SQFlash provides power failure protection mechanism in two different situations: low power and power failure. If VCC is lower than 2.9V, SQFlash will stop writing in case to write wrong data If sudden power failed, SQFlash will drop incomplete page to prevent data crash. Power Failure Lower Power

6 H/W Superiority – Performance 1/2
Test platform: ARK-1388 (Intel Core 2 Dual 1.6GHz) SQFlash provides ultra high speed performance with UDMA-5 support. Dual-channel models speed can be up to 43/40 MB/s.

7 H/W Superiority – Performance 2/2
SATA Extreme SQF-S25M8-256G-S5C Performance Test Platform Chipset: Intel G43/ICH10

17 SQFlash Value-added Software
For making it even better, we have also developed a series of value added software to enhance the security of applying flash module. And this is the main topic today. There are Flash Lock, Security ID, Life Monitoring and Emergency Erase. In the following presentation, I will introduce these functions with live demo. First of all, let’s take a look at Flash Lock.

18 BIOS Flash Lock Lock SQFlash with corresponding platform
Lock with one or multi-platforms Unlock by BIOS with password protected BIOS Flash Lock is a unique feature from Advantech to lock and disable SQFlash not to be boot from other platforms or read from card readers. It can only boot from corresponding platform. The protected password is located in both SQFlash and BIOS.

19 Access Code from Advantech
Get Flash Lock Ready… Access Code from Advantech SQFlash FW Part Partition Access Code The mechanism is simple. The first time you launch SQFlash utility, you will be prompted to enter the Access Code, which can be obtained from Advantech sales contact window. Then, this Access Code will be stored into FW part of SQFlash.

20 Flash Lock Utility Auto recognize support capability
One click to enable After entering Access Code, you’ll be led to the main window of SQFlash Utility. The utility will check if both BIOS and SQFlash are supporting flash lock function. If any of both is not supporting the function, the Flash Lock section will be gray out. If both of them are valid, then just set enable and reboot to enable this function.

21 Flash Lock Workflow Generate Password from Access Code
Write Password into BIOS Set Flag to enable status BIOS Flag Password Unlock mechanism Enable Password Lock at 1st reboot, unlock every time Access Code from Advantech Once you set Flash Lock enable, it will generate a set of password from Access Code and write it into BIOS to lock-up SQFlash and the platform After rebooting, a flag will be set to enable Flash lock If the password is match with BIOS and SQFlash, then it can boot up successfully. After that, the SQFlash can only work with corresponding platform. It cannot be access even with a card reader.

22 Flash Lock Protect your SQFlash so that it cannot be recognized or read by card reader or other platforms without an unlock process So, this is Flash lock, to lock SQFlash with a specific platform and not able to access with even a card reader. Let’s move on to the next function, Security ID.

23 Security ID The concept of Security ID is very simple,
We know that some of the system provider like POS or Gaming Machine who concerns a lot about protecting their software not to be copied. Security ID provides an approach to protect intellectual property by lock in software with a specific flash drive.

24 Security ID Mechanism SQFlash API Access Code from Advantech
Up to 256 bytes Security ID defined by user API implemented into software SQFlash API Store into hidden area of SQFlash Here’s how it works. The user can set own Security ID with SQFlash Utility. Then, Security ID will then be stored into hidden area of SQFlash as well as the previously entered Access Code. Second, the access code and Security ID should be implement into the application which wanted to be protected.

25 Security ID Workflow Access Code Security ID Check SQFlash User’s App
By doing so, once the user execute the software, it will check if both Access code and security ID match with the one stored in SQFlash. If any of both is not valid, the software cannot work. That means, if we copy the software to other storage, it cannot be execute at all.

26 Security ID Structure SID 1 in Partition
SID 2 in Controller reserved area SID 2 SID 1 SQFlash FW Part Partition As I mentioned, Security ID would be stored into hidden part of SQFlash. SID 1 -> not able to Ghost (a table to show) Access Code

27 S/W Superiority – Monitor SQFlash remain life
Monitor SQFlash health by utility or API Early-warning mechanism can be performed Life monitoring This feature helps customer to monitor SQFlash health. An early-warning mechanism can be performed since flash endurance is limited.

28 Erase Data, including FW block
Emergency Erase Standard ATA Command “Secure Erase” Execute under OS run-time Erase all data and control firmware in event of crisis Erase Data, including FW block Software trigger Even if we re-initial the Flash… it cannot really functioning normally…

29 SQFlash Software Package
Free download SQFlash software package and all related documents are available from Emb’Core website. They are free to download and user just needs to apply product key from Advantech. Record only, no extra charge.
