PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGES 7 th Grade Notes pg. 600-603 Mini lab- comparing changes

DO NOW… What is the difference between vaporization and condensation? Answer: vaporization-liquid to gas; condensation- gas to liquid

OBJECTIVES Students will… Compare several chemical and physical changes Identify examples of chemical and physical changes

PHYSICAL CHANGES (PGS.600-601) Physical Changes What Happens Examples Changing Shape Dissolving

CHANGES OF STATE (PGS. 601) TypeDefinitionExample Vaporization Condensation Sublimation Deposition

CHEMICAL CHANGES In a physical change, how the object looks changes, but what it is made of does not change. In a chemical change, substances are changed into different substances. Rusting is one example of a chemical change in which water and oxygen in air react with iron in steel to form a reddish, powdery substance.

MINI LAB: COMPARING CHANGES (PART 1) Purpose: Students will observe a chemical change with a piece of steel wool. Directions and Lab Procedures Prediction: What do you think will happen to the steel wool overnight?

FOR NEXT TIME…. Reviewing Chemical and Physical Changes Read pgs. 604-609 Define: chemical change and law of conservation of mass on index cards Lab due Thursday

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGES 7 th Grade Mini Lab Lecture/Notes

DO NOW TOGETHER… Finish Mini Lab: Comparing Changes (Part 2) Make observations and answer lab questions.

OBJECTIVES Students will… Complete Mini Lab Compare several chemical and physical changes Identify examples of chemical and physical changes

SIGNS OF CHEMICAL CHANGES (PGS. 603-606) Change Brief Explanation Change of Color Absorption or release of energy Odor Formation of gasses or solids Not easily reversed

CHEMICAL VS. PHYSICAL CHANGE Classify each of the following events as a physical change or a chemical change. 1. A tree is cut into lumber. 2. Copper is bent. 3. Marble dissolves in acid rain. 4. Wood is burned.

CONVERTING TEMPERATURES (PG. 606) The equation that relates Celsius degrees to Fahrenheit degrees is: (C x 1.8) + 32= F Practice 1- Water is being heated on the stove at 156 F. What is this temperature on the Celsius scale? 2- The boiling point of a chemical is 199 C. What is the temperature on a Fahrenheit scale?

CONSERVATION OF MASS The total mass of the matter is the same before and after a physical or chemical change. Think about a candle: The candle lost mass when it was burned. The mass lost by the candle was combined with the gases in the air to form new substances. As a result, mass was not created or destroyed.

FOR NEXT TIME… To Review: What are 5 signs that a chemical change has occurred? Physical or Chemical Quiz Complete Self Check Questions #1-3 pg. 609 in Science notebook. Bring in a flash drive for Monday (one per lab group)
