6. CHEMICAL CHANGES In a physical change, how the object looks changes, but what it is made of does not change. In a chemical change, substances are changed into different substances. Rusting is one example of a chemical change in which water and oxygen in air react with iron in steel to form a reddish, powdery substance.

15. CONSERVATION OF MASS The total mass of the matter is the same before and after a physical or chemical change. Think about a candle: The candle lost mass when it was burned. The mass lost by the candle was combined with the gases in the air to form new substances. As a result, mass was not created or destroyed.
