Week 10 Geology Warm ups Monday Nov 5 1.What are the three things necessary for rust to form? 2.Explain how mechanical weathering can affect the rate of chemical weathering. Today’s agenda: 4.1 & 4.2 Quiz Chemical Weathering pre lab Objectives: To understand chemical weathering changes the mineral composition of rocks.

 To determine what conditions are necessary for rust to form on steel wool.

 Write a hypothesis using the IF, THEN, BECAUSE format.

 Manipulated: The amount of water.  Responding: The amount of rust.  Controlled: 1.The amount of steel wool 2.The amount of time

 steel wool  3 cups  water  scissors

1.Gather your materials. 2.Using the scissors, cut the steel wool into 3 equal size pieces. 3.Place one piece of steel wool into a cup filled to the top with water. 4.Place a second piece of steel wool in a cup with a small amount of water. * The water should touch but not cover the steel wool. *

5.Place a third piece of steel wool in a cup with no water. 6.Allow the 3 cups to sit for 72 hours. 7.Observe the appearance of the steel wool in each container and record your results in table 1. 8.Clean up.

Cup Number Labeled drawing of steel wool before Labeled drawing of the steel wool after Rust Rank (amount of rust) 1 = least 3= most 1 Full of water 2 Small amount of water 3 No water

Make a bar graph of the rust rank of the 3 cups. (remember to include a title and labels for each axis. Make a bar graph of the rust rank of the 3 cups. 12 Week 10 Geology Warm ups Tuesday Nov 6 1.What are the three most important words in a hypothesis? 2.Write your hypothesis here and then copy it into the “hypothesis” section of your pre lab Today’s agenda: Finish pre lab Chapter 4 vocabulary triangles Objectives: To understand how chemical weathering occurs

See Monday’s pre lab for data table, graph and conclusion instructions.

Week 10 Geology Warm ups Wednesday Nov 7 Get your cups and sit with your groups. 1.What happened to the steel wool in each cup? 2.Tear the steel wool that rusted the most apart and compare the inside and out. Why might they look different? Today’s agenda: Complete data table Complete bar graph Write lab conclusion (handwritten, due tomorrow) Objectives: To understand how chemical weathering occurs.

Wednesday homework links *** Due Friday Nov 9 WARNING: These links will only work if you are in slideshow mode !

Week Geology Warm ups Thursday 1.What is humus? 2.What determines the type of soil that forms in a certain area? Today’s agenda: Lab conclusions due 4.2 notes Lab write up due Tuesday Objectives: To understand how organic processes affect the creation of soil.

Week Geology Warm ups Friday 1.List five of the processes that can create soil. 2.Describe the four properties of soil. Today’s agenda: Planner and Warm up check Soil Poster Vocab triangles for Chapter 4 vocab Objectives: To understand weathering and organic processes for the layers of soil

Friday homework links Soil Poster rubricSoil Poster rubric ***due Tuesday at the End of Period WARNING: These links will only work if you are in slideshow mode !
