 Any event has multiple outcomes.  The desired outcome is called a success.  Any other outcome is called a failure.  Probability is the ratio of successes to total outcomes.  0 ≤ P ≤ 1  When all outcomes are equally likely, we say the outcomes occur at random.

 s = number of ways an event can succeed  f = number of ways an event can fail

 What is the probability of rolling a sum of 7 with two dice? 1/6

 When a coin is tossed five times, what is the probability that every flip comes up heads? 1/32=0.03125

 Steve has a collection of 26 books – 16 are fiction, and 10 are nonfiction. He randomly chooses 8 books to take with him on vacation. What is the probability that he chooses 4 fiction and 4 nonfiction? 0.24464

 Stanley (Mr. Szwast’s nephew) has a collection of 15 DVD’s – 11 are animated, and 4 are live- action. He randomly chooses 3 movies to take with him to his grandparents’ house. What is the probability that he chooses 2 animated movies and 1 live-action movie? 44/91 = 0.48352

 The odds that an event will occur is the ratio of the number of successes to the number of failures.

 Find the odds of an event that has a 5/7 probability to occur.

 Find the probability of an event that has 4:3 odds.

 Page 648 #19-53 odd, 54

 A Yahtzee is when five dice are rolled and all show the same number. What is the probability of rolling a Yahtzee on a single roll of the five dice? Express your answer as a percent rounded to three decimal places. 0.077%
