Temptation’s Certainty & A Preemptive Posture 1:9-13

The Marshmallow Temptation

1 Corinthians 10:12 (ESV) Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.

Jesus’ Temptation NEWS ALERT…the more devoted to God you want your life to be…the more certain you can be of temptation and spiritual assault.

JESUS’ BAPTISM vs. 9-11 Mark 1:9–11 (ESV) In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

Jesus’ Baptism NEWS ALERT: In Mark’s gospel the BAPTISM AND TEMPTATION ARE PRESENTED AS CONNECTED EVENTS.

JESUS’ TEMPTATION vs. 12-13 Mark 1:12–13 (ESV) The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.

Jesus’ Temptation Matthew 4:3-11 Temptation

FIRST TEMPTATION vs. 3-4 Matthew 4:3–4 (ESV) And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”

Jesus’ First Temptation The Temptation:Provision... independent from God The Reply:Truth... life’s found submitted to God/His words

SECOND TEMPTATION vs. 5-7 Matthew 4:5–7 (ESV) Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” 7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”

Jesus’ Second Temptation The Temptation:Protection/Security... Presumptive on God/Testing Reply:Truth... Don’t test God in self-willed independence

Third Temptationvs. 8-11 Matthew 4:8–11 (ESV) Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ” 11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Jesus’ Third Temptation The Temptation:Direction/Significance …way to position, power, purpose Reply:Truth... life to worship and serve God and only God

SUMMARY Hebrews 4:15 (ESV) For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Jesus took on our condition in becoming human. He was tempted in every way just as we are—yet without committing sin. He was sinless though severely tempted…He endured real temptation and lived totally triumphant without sin. Jesus not only delivers us but sympathizes with us in our weaknesses.

ECLECTIC NOTE: Jesus was tempted in everything that He would legitimately receive; provision, protection, and exalted as Lord over all the nations. THE ISSUE was the source of the promise.

APPLICATION: Components of Temptations 1.Lies (Satan’s temptations always ride on the back of lies) Lies are often insidious Lies attack God’s character and regard for His love & well-being for you Lies lead you in disobedience to and disregard for God and His government

APPLICATION: Components of Temptations 2.Access Points (vulnerability) Provision – (security) Protection – (security) Direction – (significance) Sin & Strongholds 3.Demonic Influence

APPLICATION: Weapons Against Temptation 1.Truth(expose the lies and their subtleties) 2.Trust(loyalty to God by trusting His promises of truth) 3.Transaction(authority and Holy Spirit filling) 4.Righteous Living(give the enemy no access) 5.Community(honest interdependence with others)

APPLICATION: For You to Evaluate 1.Where are you vulnerable to Satan’s temptations? 2.Where are you weak in using your weapons? 3.Are you clear and convinced of God’s purposes & promises for you which are worth the battle.
