Tempted Like Jesus Luke 4:1-13

Important part of the Life of Jesus Christ we skipped over during our six-week study Jesus’ mission depended on His complete victory over every temptation We can learn a great deal about our adversary and his methods (1 Peter 5:8, 2 Corinthians 2:11) Jesus demonstrates how God enables us to resist the devil and his temptations (James 4:7, 1 Peter 5:9)

Nelson’s Bible Dictionary defines temptation as “an enticement or invitation to sin, with the implied promise of greater good to be derived from following the way of disobedience.” Can come from our “flesh”, the “world”, and the devil (Ephesians 2:1-3) Is to be resisted, as succumbing to it can have deadly consequences (James 1:13-15) Although God does not tempt us, He allows temptation as testing

1 John 2:15-17 (NIV) 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world— the lust of the flesh, (cravings, desires, physical wants) the lust of the eyes, (greed, wanting all we see) and the pride of life (vain glory, boasting, arrogance) —comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

Luke 3:21-22 “You are my Son, whom I love; 21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” with you I am well pleased.”

Luke 3:22, 38b You are my Son 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Adam, the son of God. 38b …Adam, the son of God. Identity and relationship to the Father Identity and relationship to the Father Adam was tested and failed Adam was tested and failed

Luke 4:1-2 full of the Holy Spirit led by the Spiritwilderness forty days he was tempted Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. God had a plan and purpose, “led (driven) by the Spirit” God had a plan and purpose, “led (driven) by the Spirit” “Wilderness” is often a place of testing “Wilderness” is often a place of testing 40-days of on-going temptation 40-days of on-going temptation Represents the types of temptations used by Satan Represents the types of temptations used by Satan

Luke 4:3 Ifyou are the Son of God The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” “If (since) you are the Son of God… THEN PROVE IT! “If (since) you are the Son of God… THEN PROVE IT! 10 Luke 4:3-4 Ifyou are the Son of God 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” It is written 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’” Jesus responds with relevant truth from the Word of God Jesus responds with relevant truth from the Word of God He quotes from Deuteronomy 8 He quotes from Deuteronomy 8

Deuteronomy 8:1-3 Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the L ORD promised… 2 Remember how the L ORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, …to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the L ORD.

Luke 4:5-7 high placeshowed him all the kingdoms of the world I will give you all If you worship me, it will all be yours 5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.” Satan shows Jesus a “short-cut” to the plan Satan shows Jesus a “short-cut” to the plan This temptation is directed toward our tendency for Idolatry This temptation is directed toward our tendency for Idolatry Trusting (even partially) in anything other than God and His plan Trusting (even partially) in anything other than God and His plan A key issue is the question of ownership A key issue is the question of ownership It is the lust of our eyes (want what we see) It is the lust of our eyes (want what we see)

Luke 4:8 Worship the Lord your God and serve him only. 14 Luke 4:9-11 If you are the Son of God throw yourself down from here 9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Satan used (misused) scripture (Ps. 91:11-12) Satan used (misused) scripture (Ps. 91:11-12) It was a temptation for Jesus do something dramatic that would draw attention to him It was a temptation for Jesus do something dramatic that would draw attention to him This is the Pride of life (seeking vain glory) This is the Pride of life (seeking vain glory)

Luke 4:12 12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Deut 6:16 continues “…as you did at Massah.” Deut 6:16 continues “…as you did at Massah.” Exodus 17 …at Massah they tested God Exodus 17 …at Massah they tested God It can happen as we allow doubt and fear to replace dependence and faith It can happen as we allow doubt and fear to replace dependence and faith An “I deserve better than this” attitude An “I deserve better than this” attitude Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. 16 Luke 4:13 he left him until an opportune time 13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. Satan will leave and temptation will relent if you resist Satan will leave and temptation will relent if you resist

Pray that God would “lead not into temptation” Jesus said the Peter, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall in temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Mark 14:38 Pray that God would “lead not into temptation” Jesus said the Peter, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall in temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Mark 14:38 Consider the ways we are tempted: and identify the way out So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 19 Look to Jesus (Hebrews 2:18, 4:14-16) Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
