1 Zen art is due COMPLETED on Friday at the beginning of class!

2 How does art reflect a mood? What emotion is the artist is trying to show? How does the color effect the mood? How could the artist change the mood of this painting? How could he change the characters?

3 Facial features can give the viewer a lot of information about how a character is feeling. The style of artwork that shows EMOTIONS AND EXPRESSIONS is called…..

4 Expressionism! Before the late 1800’s paintings illustrated realistic situations and subject matter with out emotion or expression…then artists started a painting style called Expressionism in which artists revealed personal expression and human emotions… emotions were ILLUSTRATED by the artists’ use of colors, line, textures, brushstrokes, etc…and viewers “felt” them.

7 Let’s design an EMOJI!!!

8 Although your average emoji is adorable and yellow and smiley, there are numerous variations to discover.

9 Your job is to create a range of expressions in your OWN designs for emoji faces. MUST BE UNIQUE! DO NOT COPY other people’s ideas! Ever.

10 Day 1: On your rough draft worksheet, design 6-9 emoji faces– each must be unique and reveal a different expression – do not copy other students’ ides! TIPS -Keep it line-based focus on line quality and simple colors. -Have your neighbor make the ‘face’ for you, notice how the facial features are positioned and replicate it in a emoji style -Choose emotions that you think very few will choose, but others should be able to tell what it is -Use a variety of DIFFERENT types of moods! Having a hard time…on the back of your rough draft paper, draw ‘normal’ faces with expressions and simplify them!

11 Day 2 1.On final draft paper, in pencil, draw your circles. You can chose to draw one size or up to three different size circles. If you would all of your designs on your final paper, that is fine, too! 2.Draw the faces, also in pencil Day 3 1.Paint the BACKGROUND…. One color transparently or LIGHT in VALUE – painting this before helps to make less mistakes. Work quickly – use larger paintbrush and plenty of water!!!! 2.Paint the FOREGROUND. Carefully paint the emojis 3.Outline in black marker

12 Emoji Rubric grading scale 4 (Awesome!)- Student shows an understanding of Expressionism through the creation of an expressive face. The face and the colors clearly illustrate the emotion. Paint is applied very neatly and clear. 3 (ok!) - Student shows an understanding of Expressionism through the creation of an expressive face. The face and the colors somewhat illustrate the emotion. Paint is applied somewhat neatly and is somewhat clear. 2 (uh, its looks like you don’t care and didn’t ask questions!!)- Student shows a lack of understanding of Expressionism through the creation of an expressive face. The face and the colors do not clearly illustrate the emotion. Paint is applied messily and is poorly done. 1 (Incomplete or stinky effort) Student shows no understanding of Expressionism and the artwork is incomplete or shows no effort.
