Counting with the number table 0123456789 10111213141516171819 20212223242526272829 30313233343536373839 40414243444546474849 50515253545556575859 60616263646566676869 70717273747576777879 80818283848586878889 90919293949596979899

Models Let us count together the circles as they appear!! How many are there? 4 or you can write it as four Now try this on your own… How Many fingers do you have? 10 or TEN Count the stars, how many do you see? 16 or SIXTEEN Now let us try counting higher!! How about we count the ice cream flavors that Ben and Jerry's offers!!!flavors How many? 63 or sixty-three

Place Value The number system that we use is the Hindu-Arabic Numeration system. This system counts in the Base of 10 and each number has an important place value that it holds. 15 Now lets break the number 15 apart And we will have 1 and 5. In math the five is in the ones place and represents 5 ones Ex: each of these blocks equals 1 so now we have 5 of them Now we also have a 1 in the number 15 and it is in the tens place. So we have one ten.Ex: This block represents one ten Here is a COOL website dealing with place Value Base Blocks - NLVMBase Blocks - NLVM

Grouping += 1 + 1 = 2 ++= 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 GROUPS OF 2 Groups of 5 ++= 5 + 5 + 5 = 15 = 1 group of 10 = 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 40 Groups of 10

Single Digit Addition 1 + 1= I + I = 1 + 2= I + II = 2 + 3 = II + III = 3 + 5= III + IIIII = 5 + 4 = IIIII+ IIII= Try these simple addition problems and use the tally marks underneath each problem for help! 2 II 3 III 5 IIIII 8 IIIII III 9 IIIII IIII NUMBERS WORDS One + One = Two One + Two = Three Two + Three = Five Three + Five = Eight Five + Four = Nine Number Line Arithmetic - NLVM

Solving Word Problems (draw pictures to help) 1. Gabriel went to a car dealership. Before talking to the salesperson, he looked at 1 pickup truck. After talking to a salesperson, he looked at 4 more pickup trucks. How many pickup trucks did he look at in all? 2. Tanner went shopping for Father's Day and bought 2 solid black shirts and 1 green striped shirt. How many shirts did he buy in all? Write an addition sentence that fits the story: 3. The snack bar sold 1 soda, 2 bottles of water, and 4 cups of coffee. How many beverages did the snack bar sell in all? 1 + 4 = 5 2+ 1= 3 1+2+4= 7 + = += ++=

Post Test 1.Can you count to 99? Try it starting with 0….FEEDBACKFEEDBACK 2.How many shapes are in this picture? Shapes FEEDBACKShapesFEEDBACK 3.Can you make a group of 2, 5 and 10 on your paper using tally marks? FEEDBACKFEEDBACK 4.In the number 37, what are the place values of the 3 and 7? Can you draw a picture showing this using the ones and tens blocks? FEEDBACKFEEDBACK 5.Solve… FEEDBACKFEEDBACK a. 1+1= b. 3+7= c. 4+1= 6. John goes to the store and buys two N.C. State t-shirts, one N.C. State hat and 3 N.C. State key chains for his friends. How many items did he buy? FEEDBACKFEEDBACK PEN TABLE OF CONTENTS

FEED BACK for right and wrong answers 1.Right- Refer to the table Wrong- If you messed up in your counting, writing the numbers down could help you, make a table like the one we have used! 2. Right- 12 Wrong- Make groups of 2 to help you organize the shapes when counting using tally marks Ex: II II II II II II 2 4 6 8 10 12 Or you can draw them out and make part of the number table to help you count correctly…Remember if you need help then DRAW A PICTURE!!table 3.Right- Groups of 2- II Groups of 5- IIIII Groups of 10- IIIII IIIII Wrong- Most likely you got the group of 5 or/and 10 wrong. If you did then here are some other ways to look at this…make a simple addition problem using tally's Ex: II+III=IIIII 2+3=5 Ex: IIIII+IIIII=IIIII IIIII (break the ten’s group down into 2 sets of five!) COUNTING Post Test

FEED BACK For right and wrong answers 4.Right- The 3 is in the ten’s place and the 7 is in the ones place Picture- Ten’s Place Ones Place Wrong- IF you did not understand this then refer to above or go the e-manipulative site and play with the blocks until you understand place value! E-manipulativeE-manipulative 5.Right- a.1+1=2 b. 3+7=10 c. 4+1= 5 Wrong- Draw Pictures to help you understand! Or use the number line!number line a.B. c. 10 = 30 1111 111 = 7 30 + 7= 37 +=+ = += Post Test

FEED BACK Question six 6.Right- 2 shirts+ 1 hat+ 3 key chains= 6 Items Wrong- How about we draw a picture to help us out!!! ++= OR USE TALLY MARKS…. II + I + III = IIIII I Here is the simple addition problem…2 + 1 + 3 = 6 Post Test
