1 Online Searching, 4 th ed. Chapter 8 America: History & Life Search Example 2: Finding Material about a Topic in a Particular Period pp. 158 – 160 Librarian’s Guide to Cultivating Database Skills for Research and Instruction
2
2 Finding works about organized crime during the Prohibition era Just as shown in the textbook (but here in color):
3
3 The myriad options and usefulness of the Refine panel! First, a reminder: your most recent search parameters Next: most frequently applied limits Then Source Types… (Academic Journals would be good for this search) But wait! There’s more! (there’s almost always “more”)
4
4 Opening the “Subject” part of the Refine panel… oh useful! “organized crime” is a Subject! The Subject list is one where you really might want to see what’s hiding behind Show More. (Opportunities to learn more terms, how many articles on X there are in this database, etc.)
5
5 The “window on window” (known as an Ajax window) display – see more without leaving the page you are on.
6
6 An example of adding one too many “refinements” (in this case, Subjects) – and being disappointed with the results: All 12 results are reviews of the same book! (and one didn’t even get the title right, sheesh) Not that helpful, since I wasn’t (this time) looking for book reviews. No problem – the offending heading was “social history” – so I just click the “x box” and remove it from my search.
7
7 As described at the end of p. 159, the “low key” menus for manipulated your results: (with the rather overwhelming set of options under “Share”)
