3 The Early Years 1930 Folk music was born Tells a tale within a story Known as the Music of the Masses 1931 Electric guitar was invented

4 1950 Doo Wop Grew out of people serenading on the streets in Philly, NY, Detroit, and D.C. Instead of fists, rivals gangs would use their voices. Was done primarily by black musicians.

5 Birth of a New Generation Out of Rhythm and Blues (R&B) came Rock N’ Roll

6 Radio DJ 1951 Alan Freed coined the term Rock N’ Roll Was a white DJ in Cleveland with a radio program called “Moondog Rock N’ Roll Party.” Was a white DJ in Cleveland with a radio program called “Moondog Rock N’ Roll Party.” White man playing black music to white teenagers.

7 Rock N’ Roll for the 1 st time! In 1952 a band out of Chester, Pennsylvania began to enjoy some modest success with a sound part country and part R&B. They wrote a song that was eventually used in a movie, “The Blackboard Jungle,” that brought them a whole lot of attention. The song was Rock Around the Clock and the band was Bill Haley and the Comets

8 1955 was the year 1955 Spawned 5 titles considered by the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame to be among the 500 most influential songs of all time. “Ain’t That a Shame” (Fats Domino), “Earth Angel” (The Penguins, “Mannish Boy” (Muddy Waters), “Maybellene” (Chuck Berry), and “Rock Around the Clock” (Bill Haley and the Comets)

10 Little Richard In New Orleans a man was pounding out rock music with a hint of gospel Tutti Frutti is considered on of Rock’s most influential songs.

11 Elvis Presley 1956 Charted more songs on the Billboard’s Hot 100 (149) Most time on top of the charts (80 weeks) Most consecutive #1 Hits (10) 2nd to Beatles with #1 hits (18) 2nd most Multi- Platinum records (19) Most Gold records (81) Most Platinum records (43)

13 Dancin’ on TV Bandstand began as a local program on WFIL- TV, channel 6 in Philadelphia on October 7, 1952. Then it was hosted by Bob Horn and was called Bob Horn’s Bandstand. On July 9 of 1956 the show got a new host, a clean-cut 26 year old named Dick Clark. It was renamed American Bandstand, airing its first national show on August 5, 1957. From 1963- 1987 Bandstand was on every Saturday night.

14 Buddy Holly releases Peggy Sue, named after the drummer’s girlfriend. Is the hottest act to hit since Elvis.

15 Music Died February 3, 1959 Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, & the Big Bopper are killed in a plane crash. Were part of the “Winter Dance Party Tour” when heat on bus goes out. Holly charted a private plane.

17 Hitsville USA Berry Gordy launches Motown Records out of his house. Gospel-based music that could appeal to the American mainstream. Wanted music that mothers and fathers would want their children to follow. Wanted to kill the image of drugs and liquor the Blues/R&B had in the past.

19 Surf’s Up 1963 Surf music takes off. Originated in Southern California and depicted carefree times (sun, beach, girls, parties, hot rods).

20 Instrumental Rock Along with vocal surf music came Instrumental Rock Put the “Fuzz” and “Twang” into Rock N’ Roll

21 Across the Pond The British Invasion was led by the Beatles. Several groups from England would follow and make it big in America The hysteria for the Beatles was called “Beatlemania.”

22 Beatle Facts The Beatles have had the most number one singles of all times, often unseating one of their own singles at number one and replacing it with another number one song. They are the only band to have held the number 1, 2 and 3 spots on the Billboard charts at the same time. Lennon and McCartney still hold the title for the most successful song writers in history with McCartney having 35 number one songs to his credit and Lennon having 26 to his. In 1964, the Beatles held five spots on the number one Billboard charts, an act that has never been repeated by any other band. The Beatles song "Yesterday" is the most recorded song in history to date.

23 Continued With the release of " I Want to Hold Your Hand", the Beatles had the fastest selling single of all time, selling over 250,000 in three days, a record still unbeaten. They were the first band to ever play in a concert stadium, Television viewing records were broken when over 70 million people tuned into to see the Beatles perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. They were the first rock band to have a cartoon based on them. The only band to have 6 diamond selling albums which means that each album sold over ten million copies.

24 Psychedelia 1965 Followed the pattern of Free Jazz. Songs were no longer in 3 minute time frame. Groups like Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd prosper. Concept Albums start to emerge. Lifted rock music from it’s Blues roots. The HIPPIE movement begins.

26 A Major Festival 1969 500,000 people would ascend onto the farm of Max Yasgar. Woodstock was a 3 day/night event. People slept in tents, in mud, in cars. Biggest names in Rock performed: Jefferson Airplane, Who, Led Zepplin, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Jolpin, the Doors, and many more.

27 Early 1970s The rock world is brought to it’s knees with the death of Janis Jolpin and Jimi Hendrix within a month of each other. Jim Morrison dies a year later in Paris.

29 Hey Punk Punk makes it’s sound in New York City. Makes a separate sound in London. England’s youth were angry, rebellious, with strong opinions. Bands were unified by location and camaraderie. Sex Pistols, Clash, Siouxsie & the Banshees were 3 of the biggest groups.

31 Funky White Boy Evolved from R & B with a heavy bass- driven groove. Paved the way for the Disco movement. George Clinton, James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, EWF, Stevie Wonder. Helped inspire Jazz Fusion and later on Rap.

32 Disco over here Disco would rise from Funk. Music was played in the clubs Like free jazz, disco would have songs that lasted 10 minutes. Some songs would have 2 versions; one for the radio and one for the clubs.

33 The invention of Techno Electronic music was born in the 70s Defined as music mainly played by synthesizers, drum machines and samplers. Early pioneers (and first all electronic band) Kreftwerk.

34 The World Goes Quiet 1980 John Lennon is shot and killed while exiting his New York apartment. Mark David Chapman shot Lennon 5 times in the back in front of his wife. The music world goes silent; candle vigals all over the world.

35 Heavy Metal Started with Black Sabbath in mid 70’s (out of England). Guitar has first real significant role. Groups: Judas Priest, Iron Madien, Motorhead Heavy Metal would eventually fork into many forms in the 80s & 90s

36 Opposite End of the Spectrum Heavy Metal would emerge on the radio in the early 80s. Parents and critics called it the Devil’s music. Claimed if played backwards it would be satanic. Fast, energetic, loud drums, guitar solos, lots of “screaming.”

39 The 1980s Heavy Metal New Wave Glam Rock (hair bands) Early Rap All dominate the air waves.

40 Watch Your Music August 1981 Mtv airs for the first time. Buggles was the first group aired when Mtv debuted. “Video Killed the Radio Star.”

41 New Wave Was a synth-pop version of Electronica. This had actual words and only one version of the song. One-hit wonders would dominate the airwaves.

43 Glam Rock Started in the 70s but flourished in the 80s Guys would wear girls clothing, make-up, they would have big hair with lots of hairspray. Groups like: Poison, Warrant, Brittany Fox, Twisted Sister.

44 Hardcore Faster and louder than heavy metal. Words were screamed

45 The World Comes Together 1985 Band Aide the first outdoor concert for a cause. Raised money for farmers. 1985 We Are the World raises money for Ethiopia. First time supergroup comes together for one song. Musicians include: Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Bruce Springstein, Hall & Oats, actor Dan Akroid.

46 1988 Billy Joel plays concert in Moscow. This is significant because Russia was still a communist country and it was the first time they allow someone into the country who was not Russian.

47 Emocore Was more emotional than hardcore. Singers could scream as well as whisper in pitch. Slower tempos than hardcore. Medium range tempos. Weezer falls into this category.

48 Lazy Rock Seattle becomes the birth place of Grunge Rock. Gave an lethargic, dirty sound to rock. Nirvana took music in a completely new direction. The hard rock sound would not return to the radio until late 90s (’98 or ’99) Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains all dominate.

50 Also in the 80s & late 90s Aerosmith lends song out to rap group Rockers start rapping Rock music incorporates mixing into their music (late 90s)

51 Ska and Rock Steady Ska was founded in Jamaica, but was unsuccessful in America. Founding father was Prince Buster. Rock steady is the slowed down version of ska. Rock steady started in England by Jamaican working class (hot summer)

52 Reggae Movement Reggae is a direct descendant of rock steady. First Reggae album was released in 1968. Reggae was faster than rock steady but more complex than ska. Starting toasting, manipulated vocal tracks which lead the way to hip hop. Bob Marley puts reggae on the world map.

53 New Wave Reggae

54 Where We Are Today Rock and metal have rebounded from the 6 years of Grunge Rock during the 90s. New groups are coming out everyday. Groups like Aerosmith, Metallica, U2 still are big names and have lasted 30 years. Technology may lead rock in a whole new direction.
