4 Chinese Exclusion Act Why hate on the Chinese, but not another immigrant group? – The US Government felt that their culture secluded them from the rest of the American population… – The Chinese culture was too different and they were not being productive citizens In Reality: 1.The Chinese were taking too many jobs away from American workers. 2.Many Chinese did not speak English which made many Americans resent them. 3.Americans did not understand their religion (mostly Buddhist). 4. They simply looked different.

5 “Slightly” Open Door Chinese Exclusion Act (1882) – Banned entry for nearly all Chinese immigration. The act was initially intended to last for 10 years, but was renewed in 1892 and made permanent in 1902. “…the coming of Chinese laborers to this country endangers the good order of certain localities within the territory.”
